The King Alfred window at St Andrew’s church, Aller in Somerset. After his defeat at the Battle of Ethandun, Guthrum the Old was baptised at Aller church in June 878AD along with 30 of his warriors.

After talking to farmer and checking fields, they are too dangerous in winter to promote as a route. The first stage will need to be linear, with advantage of being able to extend west to #AlfredJewel, north to #Wedmore and east to #HarrowWay. Route starts #EastLyng and #Athelney, and on to #Aller

Gentle walk from #Athelney Farm, with a permissive path up to Alfred’s abbey (879AD), following the East Deane Way along the River Tone until it meets the River Parrott at #Burrowbridge and the King Alfred pub, with a nice return route through the village

Was this whilst Alfred was at Athelney having escaped Chippenham on 6th January 878AD, and before the Battle of Ethandum in May 878AD?

A challenging job because a very large garden and had to be done in a day to enable a safe hospital discharge, but was great working with guys from Sleek Easy Clean who are always bursting with energy and cleared household waste from garden 😃

I so know that feeling!

Bit gloomy today but still well worth the walk from #Aller to #BurrowMump. The Iron Age fort at #Athelney from where #Alfred raised an army and defeated #Guthrum is hidden even from this height! #Somerset
