Several years ago, we saw a truck in New Mexico (NM plates, too) with bumper stickers for both the Yankees AND the Patriots. One of the worst things I've seen, tbh.

Re-upping this thread on classical studies under fascist regimes.

Yes! It totally blew my mind.

I am shook that it's been twenty years, aka the lament of the middle aged. I wouldn't be the scholar I am now without the medieval courses I took.

Newborn phase means I'm just now seeing this but I strongly third both Isabel and Liz's comments. It is not an exaggeration to say that my career would not be the same if I hadn't had ktl!

Though, admittedly, I guess maybe he was gallant? But geez, classicists, can we please stop failing the "don't be openly racist" challenge?

John Bell Hood - Wikipedia

If you're not familiar with this charmer (perhaps because, unlike me, you didn't grow up in spitting distance of the Battle of Franklin), he was one of the Confederacy's worst generals who was responsible for huge losses of life. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Be...

My face when I opened what I expected to be a regular piece of classical scholarship from 1998 and this was the beginning of the first sentence: "Gen. John Bell Hood, the most gallant figure of the whole Christian age, was thinking of historiography when he wrote..." 😬😱☠️

I also don't understand how people can keep their child sitting still to do their hair in the morning without something playing in front of them.

I'm convinced these people are lying. It's a Venn diagram that overlaps with the people who claim that their children are reading and solving equations at two and a half (and are also lying).

When I last taught Myth in 2017, I was several weeks into the semester when a student approached me and asked me what the abbreviation "pp" meant on the syllabus. At regional R1s this definitely started before covid or AI, but both have absolutely exacerbated it.

Any recent PhDs still looking for something for this coming academic year should apply to our postdoc! Its inaugural holder was a classicist!

When I lost my kitty after eighteen and a half years together, a friend told me I'd see her out of the corner of my eye sometimes, and those would be the times she was coming back to check on me. I still think of that today. ❀️

This is why we started weekly writing groups for women faculty at Texas Tech when I arrived here in 2015 - to give them protected time to work on research.

I once interviewed someone over Zoom while breastfeeding. Sadly, Cicero didn't have the equipment for that sort of display.

Really sorry that something so vile was said to you. The rise of fascism is certainly revealing everyone's true colors, for both good and ill.

It really shocked me that someone would express those views publicly!

This is a subtweet (subskeet?) of Sarah Pomeroy, who seems to have no problem identifying publicly with these views.

It is truly upsetting that a senior scholar in classics, with the protections and stature of tenure, would openly gloat about the US denying visas to people (often nontenured) due to their political views. Maybe the worst thing I've ever seen on the Classics listserv, and that's saying something.

This includes #classics, by the way. I spent a year at Indiana as a VAP - it was a wonderfully supportive place for me and all the classes I taught were highly enrolled. This is a tragedy.

Have biked over it many times. Something about crossing state lines on a long bike ride makes it feel extra epic.

If I don't automatically get granted full professorship for that, they're going to need to rethink the whole system.

26.06.2025 23:54 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Indeed! And Cicero himself would be quite offended if anyone dared to be brief about him...

26.06.2025 23:18 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Oh Lord! I was told I had 20k words for the subject of Cicero (possi-probably for the same series) and I was shook. Only 8k in at the moment. Well done to you!

I'm sorry, it's really scary. And part of a worldwide trend of massive cuts being made in various ways.

21.06.2025 03:00 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Yes, exactly. I'm sure we're going to be in the hole, but the spin is that it's primarily going to affect start up funding. And as a more recent R1 that's less grant dependent, maybe that's somewhat more true?

We're "lucky" in that we got an endowment this past year for the first time, which our dean anticipates will largely fill the gap. So I guess they think we'll just go back to where we were a few years ago. I really hope that's what happens, b/c it sounds like the least bad option.
