Some Asian people posted a photo of themselves having dinner. It reads: "Went to a fancy dinner in SF and everybody went to Harvard (or Stanford)"
The next day, the followed up with a tweet that reads: "Almost all of us are Americans. FWIW, More of us are Americans than Asian."
Two quote tweets. The first has a racist drawing of Asian people and it says "I rent to fancy dinnah and everybody rent 2 Havah (or Stanfah)."
The other shows Yale's Skulls and Bones society in the 1940s, where a bunch of White Anglo-Saxon Protestant men in suits are composed for a group photo. An Italian man writes: "This is what Ivy Leaguers are supposed to look like."
Two quote tweets. The first reads: "Foreigners post stuff like this and then act surprised that GenZ males are so far right they'd make Rush Limbaugh blush. I hope they realize Trump is their last chance for a moderate solution."
The other reads: "I’m so glad that 17 Americans didn’t get to go to Harvard or Standford because these peoples parents spent $10,000 on SAT prep"
Two quote tweets. The first reads: "Living exclusively around these people for over 15 years is what turned me into a nazi. They're like this all the time."
The other reads: "Not going to lie, very depressing to see our hallowed western university system turn into a network of Striver Universities for intellectually incurious exam maxxing Kumon monsters"
Interesting how much resentment this photo created from white conservatives who assumed that the dismantling of DEI meant elite schools would return to the 1940s.

A global blockade against the US until Trump resigns and tariff rates are returned to their January 2025 levels is an option whose outcome I would be curious to know.

Same thing happened in Buffalo with Byron Brown after India Walton won the primary. He went on to win the general election and then resigned office to take a position with OTB.

Today in Kansas ICE & HSI simultaneously raided 2 restaurants, both of the same chain. Instantly community members mobilized to the locations. They chased HSI out of the restaurant in the middle of their raid."

Trump has a point: the underage girls at the Mar-a-Lago spa were meant to serve the pedophilia of Trump and his guests, and only the pedophilia of Trump and his guests, so for Epstein to poach them on behalf of his own pedophilia was absolutely unethical.

there's a tendency to grant all of trump's premises and then be like "even if what he's saying is true about the epstein files it makes no sense not to release them" like catching him in a lie or inconsistency is important when instead what we should be doing is relentlessly calling him a pedo

There is absolutely no excuse for any Democrat asked about trans athletes to ever respond with anything but “why are you wasting my time asking about FEWER THAN FIFTEEN CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS IN THE ENTIRE COUNTRY WHO WANT TO PLAY GAMES WITH THEIR FRIENDS. What is wrong with you?”

Something like this is in most university press contracts, and likely those issues by other publishing houses. There are a lot of authors of academic books who get zero royalties on ebooks, despite that format now being the primary revenue source for monographs.

This is a VERY good question. The grant of rights clause(s) tend to be extremely loose and have in the past been used by many a publisher to be, ahem, creative in licensing content.
26.07.2025 16:32 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0
I would encourage authors with this press to check your contracts. My contract with Arcadia Press doesn't allow me to take back my rights or stop them from eventually selling my books off as data, but yours with Johns Hopkins Press might.
26.07.2025 15:52 — 👍 86 🔁 60 💬 3 📌 0
Authors won't get a share of this additional revenue. Will the list price of books come down? Will staff be better compensated? I'm pretty certain the answer to both of those questions is no. So who benefits?
26.07.2025 16:18 — 👍 37 🔁 7 💬 0 📌 0
Wondering now how much money the publisher gets for the license. I have to assume it's more than $100 per book. And there are almost certainly elements within the license that will generate additional revenue for the press and/or reduce their costs.

I started my 20+ year publishing career at JHUP. I'm clear-eyed about how university presses work. Giving authors a paltry $100 so an LLM can scrape their work is incredibly odious.
