In a sector where there is always too much to do, too few people to do it, and ever-dwindling budgets, any other kind of assessment is a luxury, sadly. To do assessment well requires time, thought, care, and creativity (IMO). Surveys of faculty/students are relatively inexpensive and easy. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

These conversations aren't happening in many of the spaces I inhabit in #HigherEd, to our collective detriment.
.
Mays's piece reminds of this and nudges us to reckon with the moral and ethical undercurrents of this moment in transparent and values-driven ways.

Moral injury surrounds us, and each of us in #HigherEd is struggling to identify our own red lines & core values. That includes students, who aren't sure they can trust our institutions and/or their instructors to be acting in accordance with our stated values, which begs the question: should they?

05.08.2025 14:31 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's the erosion of trust in ourselves--in our ability to perceive a situation clearly and understand what's being asked of us--that is most pernicious. It's genuinely destabilizing and existentially threatening.
.
More than ever, we must have compassion for our colleagues and our students.

I've experienced moral injury at two moments, and both had the effect Mays describes: "When we educators and leaders repeatedly experience a conflict between institutional demands and our ethical convictions, it gradually erodes our trust in ourselves, in others and in the institutions we serve."

Higher Ed Is Morally Injured (opinion) As higher ed confronts a crisis of values, we must name, witness and transcend moral injury, Mays Imad writes.

I am enormously grateful for the clear writing and ethical perspective offered by my friend Mays Imad, in this vital piece for @insidehighered.com today: www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

"It’s true that there are physical feats that players in one league can accomplish that players in the other league simply cannot. For example, one league has players like DeWanna Bonner, who can carry and give birth to twins and return the next season to average 17.3 points and 7.2 rebounds a game, while the other league has multiple players like LeBron James, who can carry the ball."

RARELY (and I mean that) have I seen a preview of an APSR piece that feels so shockingly relevant and meaningful. Congrats on getting this through peer review to publication. This is necessary work. #PoliSci #Disability #Scholarship

This is so, so true. I have many friends and colleagues who find conference food options to be incredibly difficult to navigate--and for no good reason. Catering orders have to be placed FAR in advance. JUST TELL PEOPLE WHAT TO EXPECT. It's not like it's hard.

No one - I repeat - no one who is a climate action expert is telling you not to use AC.

It is a bunch of unaccountably sanctimonious randos and we reject everything they're saying.

Stay a safe temperature. Stay alive. Stop burning fossil fuels.

For a while now, I've had a keen interest to talk about the things I wish I'd known before I first requested accommodations. I envision a project that equips readers with that knowledge plus some of the more social side of things.

25.07.2025 23:22 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm specifically thinking about weaving knowledge about accommodations, process, etc., with research, community, and narratives from a variety of different disabled academic perspectives. Not replicating Margaret Price/Jay Dolmage's work, but a bit more on the how-to/advice side. The friend we need.

Ever since work wrapped up on the manuscript for my book, I've been trying to figure out what the next project is. Earlier today, I was doing some reading, and ideas started to coalesce around the idea of a ... companion/handbook for disabled folks working in academia. Thoughts?!
