The franchise pretty uniformly has a really great attitude of people being into nerd shit but doing it with absolutely no shame or hesitation because they know they’ll be accepted and encouraged by their friends. I’m trying to do that myself but I know it will end with a friend’s improv comedy show

The thing that makes Star Trek utopian isn’t the end of scarcity or the harmony between all peoples it’s also that the guy on the ship who gets laid the most plays the trombone at work and periodically does community theater

It’s also really great because they have the most amazing technology anyone could ever ask for in the holodeck, they use it, but then they’ll also show up for their robot’s cat poetry night because they realize it’s important to be present with those you love and that technology isn’t a substitute

We're going to talk about c19 today and I'm going to ask you all in advance to not zone out like you do when we're talking about it in personπŸ˜‘

Covid not "a cold" - it attacks every system of the body, making it weaker to every other kind of infection. There's another illness that does similar.

And if you stopped masking it’s okay to start again.

It’s worth it.

The image shows a text post from tumblr user "theconcealedweapon":

If you really care about preventing government tyranny your #1 priority must be making sure criminals have rights.

And that’s not a joke or an exaggeration.

If criminals don’t have rights, then all the government has to do is to find Some excuse to label people as criminals, and those people will no longer have rights.
It’s what literally every tyrannical government in all of history has done.

If you believe that people who break the law should forfeit their rights, you’re literally as pro-tyranny as a person can get.

learned recently that the guy who wrote "The Night Before Christmas," clement clarke moore, also wrote a takedown of thomas jefferson's proto-scientific racism in "Notes on the State of Virginia," basically accusing him and others of making it up to justify slavery. which, that's right.

I just got invited to have my first book featured in a fairly fancy bookstore's "book club," which they indicated would involve me paying them and, uh, no, that is not how this has ever worked.

billionaires should not be allowed to exist because the downside of "one of them loses their mind" is simply too dangerous for a functional society

also, having a billion dollars tends to make you lose your mind

Hating the ACA is similar to hating on vaccines.

It's a luxury borne of not really appreciating what existed before.

The fix wasn't perfect, and there is a lot more that we could do to make it better.

But the "ACA Was Bad" Discourse is just untethered from reality.

20.10.2025 17:31 β€” πŸ‘ 946    πŸ” 189    πŸ’¬ 18    πŸ“Œ 15

Pre-ACA, and esp pre-EMTALA, we were absolutely cruel to most vulnerable among us.

Was the ACA perfect, even before Roberts tore up chunks of it because he personally didn't like it, and he arrogated to himself the power to wreck stuff? No.

But did it do A LOT of good? FOR. SURE.

No lifetime maxes. Pre-ACA, insurance companies would put lifetime max costs on coverage. I had NICU nurses talk about kids who would hit their LIFETIME max before their first breath of non-hospital air.

No pre-existing conditions. "No insurance if you had serious injuries." So my kid? Uninsurable.

A giant stack of papers, about 1/2 the size of an apple, on a counter.

Are we doing "The ACA Sucks" Discourse again?

I'm going to guess most people hating on it from the left have never received a hospital bill the size of book; I put the apple there for scale.

That's the $1.3 million bill my kid incurred in his first ~94 days. Why does that make me respect the ACA?

To supplement the newly passed Council legislation that increases fines for properties with never-ending sheds, we'll also pursue ways to incentivize buildings to get scaffolding down quickly.
