We designed and launched our first Youtube video, adding fluidity to our Conscious Trends Report 2024 through motion design. To make things more special, the lead designer of this project, Tulika Patel, joins us full-time next month!

He has intentionally quoted 'design', as he curated this module to not just be a visual or tech course, but more about the act and process of owning a small space on the web. As usual, Aman has made his course outline & resources open-source.

It's been a special month for @aman.bh in particular. He has completed two years at RVL, and taught his second university course of the year on web 'design' at DA-IICT.

July saw us juggle 7 projects at the studio—kicking off 2, wrapping up 1, and bringing another 2 closer to the finish line. 5,706 Slack messages and 57 code commits attest to our momentum over the month.

This form of cross-platform conversion has helped add dynamism to the static report, and extends its relevance by repurposing and publishing short bits of content.

In addition to this long-form video, we've also produced short video bytes of excerpts from the report, published as Reels by Godrej Design Lab.

We developed a narrative, shaped the storyboard, and crafted thoughtful motion graphics that carry over the report’s ideas to a fluid new medium.

We’ve brought our Conscious Trends Report 2024 to screen—transforming the report into our first-ever YouTube video, crafted to engage both familiar and unfamiliar audiences alike.

“A small adjustment in code, but one that transformed how the data feels. It’s about looking at the chart’s design mock-up in its most atomic units, and figuring out how the tool (in this case, D3) can help build it for you.”

“But how was the visual metaphor of the box incorporated? By splitting each rectangle into two parts—the main box and a smaller "lid" on top, we duplicated the rectangle, shrank it to 10% height and nudged it slightly upward.”

The story’s developer, @aman.bh explains, “At its core, it’s just a regular D3 treemap. D3 does the math to size and place each rectangle based on the data.”

We put a twist on treemaps, turning them into stacks of supply boxes, echoing how aid is physically delivered on the ground.

A refreshing reminder that tinkering is a long-term game, and that momentum beats motivation.

5. Waiting for perfection (Most projects will never be "finished", for there are always things one can keep adding. The key here is to recognise that "good enough" is also important.)

4. Working in isolation (Aman claimed that his best work has been the result of collaboration with friends and people who can be creative with you)

3. Shiny Object Syndrome (It may seem like there are way too many tools and frameworks out there to choose from. Pick a handful that make sense to your craft, and deepen your expertise in them.)

2. Relying only on fleeting motivation (Just show up everyday, and you will get things done)

1. Thinking your idea isn't “big” enough (It doesn't have to be—what matters is whether you'll learn something new, and if you care enough to finish it)
