i was never in there with dry eyes or closed mouth. i wrote “sorry” on the floor in there with a pebble once. i was never quite sure who i was apologizing to. sometimes i felt inexplicably pregnant with myself, like i had a great, unspeakable obligation to the future “me” to escape and thrive.

i was always worried that it was a really good place to end it, so maybe i would be tempted, but i never was. it was so quiet, and i was squished up against a beautiful protest mural. one time i had to discard my jacket before returning, because i knew she would see the chalk and find my spot.

i still doodle the alcove sometimes. i curled up in there about 20 separate times. it’s a very comforting place for me, despite what you know about it. it’s very emotionally charged, but mostly with feelings of tranquility and relief, much more than fear and despair.

who else got that hidden alcove that they ran to and hid inside of when they needed to escape their abuser 🙋🏻
