The overall SOMOC may weaken in the future, but we don't know this for sure.
08.07.2025 04:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The upper cell of the SOMOC may have strengthened while the lower cell of the SOMOC has most likely weakened.
08.07.2025 04:16 β π 3 π 1 π¬ 1 π 2The surface Southern Ocean has gotten saltier. We can detect this from space!
08.07.2025 04:16 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0While it is wonderful to see a cartoon in the Guardian talking about Antarctica, the science is badly misrepresented!
08.07.2025 04:16 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0No! The Southern Ocean meridional overturning circulation (SOMOC) is very much active! Studies differ on what will happen to the SOMOC in the future, some say it will strengthen while others say it will weaken. But it is true that the surface ocean has gotten saltier.
08.07.2025 04:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1Why not? Plenty of European Geophysical Union journals follow a similar model and Iβve found it to work really well.

I love your sea ice visualisations! Sorry to hear about the attacks on science and humanities!
28.02.2025 16:14 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Funnily enough, I found hope from reading Merchants of Doubt by Oreskes. Mainly because I learned that we can definitely take action, if the people who are lying to us that we cannot get out of the way!

The deep ocean around Antarctica in winter is much warmer than the surface which is at near freezing temperatures (of about -2 deg C).
