"What would happen if we stopped acting as if the primordial
form of work is laboring at a production line, or wheat field,
or iron foundry, or even in an office cubicle, and instead
started from a mother, a teacher, or a caregiver?
.
We might be forced to conclude that the real business of
human life is not contributing toward something called the
economy but the fact that we are all, and have always been,
projects of mutual creation."

One of David Graeber's most interesting pieces was from 2013 called - 'A practical utopians guide to the coming collapse.'

Here is an extract.

I need more โ€œlate bloomerโ€ stories! Tell me about the things that you did at 50+ that you never thought youโ€™d do or finally got to do!

And if you have examples that arenโ€™t you, bring โ€˜em!

Learning in school is not enough. You must continue to teach yourself throughout your life. Study history, read myths, memorize poems, get acquainted with the greatest philosophers & writers. In an age when tech is cooking many brains, we need an army of autodidacts.

I know it sounds mad but if you had regular exposure to trees and sunlight and started reading again for pleasure, it would heal you.

I've seen some posts suggesting day drinking to deal with today's news, and I want to offer some suggestions for how to get through today if you don't want to drink, or use drugs. I'm going to suggest these things as someone who hasn't drank or taken drugs in over 9 years. I hope they help.

Some years ago I wrote a piece called โ€œArmy of Altruistsโ€ where I tried to grapple with
the power of right-wing populism, especially with the way that โ€œwe hate the liberal eliteโ€
and โ€œsupport the troopsโ€ seemed to have a very similar, deep resonance, even to be a
way of saying the same thing. What I ended up concluding is that working class people
hate the cultural elite more than they do the economic eliteโ€”and mind you, they donโ€™t
like the economic elite very much.
.
But they hate the cultural elite because they see them as a group of people who have
grabbed all the jobs where one gets paid to do good in the world. If you want a career
pursuing any form of value other than monetary value, if you want to work in journalism,
and pursue truth, or in the arts, and pursue beauty, or in some charity or international
NGO or the UN, and pursue social justiceโ€”well, even assuming you can acquire the
requisite degrees, for the first few years they wonโ€™t even pay you. So youโ€™re supposed
to live in New York or some other expensive city on no money for a few years after graduation.
.
Who else can do that except children of the elite? So if youโ€™re a fork-lift operator or even a
florist, you know your kid is unlikely to ever become a CEO, but you also know thereโ€™s no
way in a million years theyโ€™ll ever become drama critic for the New Yorker or an international
human rights lawyer. The only way they could get paid a decent salary to do something
noble, something thatโ€™s not just for the money, is to join the army. So saying โ€œsupport the
troopsโ€ is a way of saying โ€œfuck youโ€ to the cultural elite who think youโ€™re a bunch of
knuckle-dragging cavemen, but who also make sure your kid would never be able to join
their club of rich do-gooders even if he or she was twice as smart as any of them.

This is a long quote, but with the Democrats and Liberal-Centrists totally failing to understand right-wing populism and mottos like 'support our troops,' the quote is worth reading through.

It's been about 10 years since I started my career as a publishing researcher in philosophy. A career review thing here at LSE prompted me to reflect on how well I think I have done relative to my actual ambitions. I wrote up the self-evaluation and shared it.

I think the concept of "introversion" impeded my development as a young person, and I think we need to do away with the introvert/extrovert distinction. It made me feel like socializing and social graces were the province of a certain kind of person that I was not
