I can’t wait to see what Leigh will do with this topic. Their earlier articles which touched upon the topic of disgust are giving me high hopes. I have no doubt that β€œGross” will go down as one of the most interesting and most twisted science books of all.

Leigh’s prior book β€œHurts So Good” is a masterful exploration of pain on purpose. It’s one of the most fascinating and insightful things you’ll ever read (I was lucky enough to consult on the pain science in the book).

I’ve been calling Leigh the best science writer in the world for many years. The reason for this is that they’re absolutely meticulous about the scientific details, and at the same time their writing is incredibly emotive. If Leigh wants you to feel something, you *will* feel it.

FRIENDS! FRIENDS! There was a book deal announced today, and it’s a big one.
The one and only @voraciousbrain.bsky.social will be writing a book on the science of disgust. Here’s why I’m extremely excited about this:

exactly :) any lump can be a sexy lump if the vibe is right

28.02.2025 19:32 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

oooh the clothing argument! I like it, but

single unit for ass in briefs, two units of all for thongs and gym shorts that have the scrunchie thing up the butt crack

two units of boob in a cup bra, one unit of boob for the sports bra

the ambiguous nature of humps, may they vex us eternal

28.02.2025 19:31 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

oooh expanding the lump category, a risky but exciting move. Is a word as unsexy as "lump" being used only to refer to erotic lumps and, if so, who defines the erotic? perhaps it is here that the song really reaches for genius

When Fire Is the Only Way Out - Inquest At a far-flung prison in Virginia, conditions are so inhumane that those imprisoned there are setting themselves ablaze in protestβ€”and to assert their humanity.

"[T]he racism and abusesβ€”the [..] inhumane conditions at Red Onionβ€”were so intolerable that he and others were setting themselves on fire in desperate attempts to be transferred away from the prison."

β€œThese were not protests, he made clear, but acts of desperation."

I think this framing works, it just begs the question: at what point, smoosh-wise, can two humps become one, rhetorically? like, can the boobies become one hump if pressed together, the way jeans can form two cheeks into one?

28.02.2025 19:23 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I think what I am missing is the hump/humps disambiguation; surely there must be a system of differentiation??

also, by the opening lines is it all....is it all ass?

28.02.2025 19:21 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I welcome you to the fight, the text is rich! I always assumed that

lumps = titties
humps = ass
hump = Fergie is a dromedary camel

28.02.2025 19:17 β€” πŸ‘ 13    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

in light of this, I believe she is a dromedary camel. my partner does not, and contends that a butt may be referred to as a single unit when physically round, despite its characteristic double ass cheek design, a shape that gives it (deep sigh) two fucking humps

28.02.2025 19:10 β€” πŸ‘ 5    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

see, Fergie switches between saying "my hump" and "my humps" and I contend, most bitterly and to the dismay of my beloved, that she is talking about not just her butt, which would always be "humps" as it is classically split in twain

28.02.2025 19:08 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

everything is terrible and shit is incredibly bad and we are over here fighting behind closed doors about the nature of the human ass, as god intended. and I just will not let it go.

28.02.2025 19:05 β€” πŸ‘ 9    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

the thing I fight about most often with my partner of ten years, in case you're curious: the specific lyrics of "my humps" and what they mean anatomically-speaking

hell yes!! I love the puzzle aspect of it so much, like when I'm learning something new and I have to expend so much *thinking* to figure out what goes where and when, what pushes and what pulls and what releases, where the contact points are, all of it. Just a little meat-based puzzle :)
