Jim Amash interviewed Rudy Lapick who was on staff at Timely until around 1950 and Lapick told Amash that he found it very unnerving when Lee would tell people they were fired. Al Jaffee told Amash that Lee used to "tease" people like that "all the time" but many would take it the wrong way.

The claim Lee "hated to fire people" is contradicted by accounts of Lee taking a fiendish delight in firing people when Goodman eliminated the artist staff in 1949. Lee thought it was a big laugh to walk up to a person and tell them they were being fired.

Al Jaffee was one of Timely editors at the time and said the reason Goodman decided to use only freelance artists was because Goodman no longer wanted to pay for the insurance mandated by the G.I. bill for returning vets after WWII.
Fingeroth is basically just another fan who parrots Lee's nonsense

Note the whip and the axe in Al Jaffee's cartoon lampooning Lee. It's know Lee would watch the staff om a closed circuit television. John Buscema said Lee would whip the artists (I assume he meant verbally) adding Lee was "a real jerk."

The artists were paid by the hour not the page. Goodman would have been thrilled with excess inventory. It cost Goodman nothing if the artists produced a surplus. In fact various accounts by people who worked in the late '40s bullpen indicate the artists were being ridden hard to produce.

The trouble with Lee's art in the closet story is in 1948-49 when the supposed incident occurred Goodman was employing artists working on salary in an actual bullpen working like a bunch of sewing machine operators making TEMU clothing in China.

It's pathetic a person like Fingeroth is viewed as a historian when he makes mistakes like the following. No idea where the $100K in inventory came from. Even the art pages in a storage closet is highly questionable.

Part of the Evanier-Fingeroth discussion has them agreeing no new face appeared in the Marvel Bullpen between 1958 and 1965. Just absurd.
Evanier does correct Fingeroth's lie claiming Kirby was involved in a half dozen lawsuits with Marvel.

Let's not assume the +73K figure is accurate. It's more likely -50K.

The funniest thing about this book is rather than address Kirby's many easy to find and completely unvarnished criticisms of Lee, Fingeroth repeats a claim made by Joe Simon which was contradicted by Kirby and then invents an absurd theory Kirby was angry about a Romita drawing of a cop.
