Thanks for the share, Alex. I know one of the British umpires who travelled to the course,; they already know it's going to improve their umpiring. We don't have a glut of umpires over here, a few one-day MLB courses for the benefit of the US pro leagues isn't going to help grass roots anywhere.

The βHarvard of umpire schoolsβ closes as changing times favor tech over tradition
An umpiring tradition born in 1938 reflects on its legacy as robo umps and other advancements usher in a new era.
The last class of the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School. MLB might be taking over umpire finding for Majors and Minors, but there are more games and umpires needed worldwide... and they've just lost one of the best practical courses. www.nytimes.com/athletic/704...

A promotional card for a baseball radio broadcast. It features LA Dodgers pitcher Don Sutton. It says "Don Sutton is in the early stages of his career that will see him become the Dodgers all time leader in wins, starts, and shutouts. But in 1969 he was one of many pitchers figuring out the new mound height and strike zone."
Following the dominance of pitchers in the 1968 season, MLB has taken steps to even things out, and hurlers across the two leagues are dealing with smaller strike zones and lower mound heights. Don Sutton is one of them, as he faces Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds in April 1969.

A baseball game is taking place at the Cincinnati Reds' Crosley Field in 1969.
Another week, another game to explore. Crosley Field welcomes the Los Angeles Dodgers to the home of the Cincinnati Reds. The year of the pitcher is over, tonight's pitchers (Don Sutton and Jim Maloney) are settling in with the new rules, and the first hints of the Big Red Machine are on show.

Then we have the scorecards. These are used "as live" during the recordings. We have the line-up in advance and can note their slash lines on the day, along with notes on player temperaments and important facts. As we go through the broadcast, we fill in the scorecard to keep us on top of the game.

A page of commentators' notes for a baseball game, with game stats, league standings, scores, pitcher reports, and trivia for the broadcast.
Next we have the Commentators' Notes. Prepared beforehand, this has the league standings at the time of the game, scores from around the leagues, pitcher reports, field notes, trivia, previous series, and whatever we find that might be useful. Also have some tick charts for progress and editing.

Clint Courtney needs a comically huge baseball glove to catch Orioles' knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm.
Hoyt Wilhelm is coming on in relief for the Baltimore Orioles as they take on the New York Yankees. Given the vicious nature of Wilhelm's knuckleball, catcher Clint Courtney needs a secret weapon... a 45-inch catcher's mitt. Head back in time to August 15 1960 with your AM radio (err, podcast).
