Yes! We see #ProportionalRepresentation as the best way to address gerrymandering by far.

The game of maximizing narrow wins and minimizing blowouts doesn't work well under PR, where narrow wins result in *fewer seats* than blowout wins. District lines matter much less!

Many voters say Congress is broken. Could proportional representation fix it? With Congress increasingly polarized, there are growing calls to replace the winner-take-all approach for House elections with a system that advocates say could better reflect the country's diversity.

ICYMI: With Congress increasingly polarized, there are calls to replace the winner-take-all approach for House elections with a "proportional representation" system. Advocates say it could eliminate gerrymandering's threat and ensure fair representation of voters of color

Checks and balances between branches don't work well in a two-party system where one party is guaranteed to have control of most of the branches.

A multi-party system via #ProportionalRepresentation does a much better job of decentralizing power as the Founders really intended.

Democracy isn’t just about voting. It’s about representation.

If your vote doesn’t help shape the legislature, it’s just decoration.

#ProportionalRepresentation makes your vote count for real.

Please keep in mind that this tactic only works on closed-list systems. For open-list PR (e.g., Sweden, Belgium), the party list ranking is determined solely by the voters.

And for Proportional Ranked Choice Voting (e.g., Portland), there are no party lists at all.

What it would take to escape the two-party system Americans say they want a third party β€” but making it happen is tricky.

"Well, #ProportionalRepresentation is the most common system of voting, and it basically... means that parties get shares of seats in proportion to what percent of the vote they get. So if a party gets 30 percent of the vote, it gets 30 percent of the seats..."

Proportional representation and polarization With better representation and more equal weight given to citizens’ votes in House elections, the zero-sum nature of politics could begin to change.

@fixourhouse.bsky.social is fighting to bring #ProportionalRepresentation to the US, and we're working towards bringing it to the California state legislature.

Well, @fixourhouse.bsky.social is the group working towards PR in the House of Representatives. We're focused on the California state legislature.

We're not yet aware of a movement working towards PR in the Senate, but please let us know if you hear of one.

Exactly! Having to finish first in an election is way too high a bar for the alternative parties.

@fixourhouse.bsky.social is working for #ProportionalRepresentation at the federal level in the House of Representatives, and we are working on the California state legislature.

#ProportionalRepresentation decentralizes power so that everybody has a say.

Authoritarians prefer centralizing power and thus predictably oppose it.

14.07.2025 16:10 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 6    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 1

#ProportionalRepresentation is fair.

Yes, some groups that many might consider extreme, fringe, or crazy would get representation that they might not have now.

BUT!

The only policies that pass will be ones that have broad support, and that's in stark contrast to what we have right now.

Two images. The top one illustrates the current system Single-Member Districts with Winner-Take-All Elections using a diverse pie chart with four slices becoming a single circle of the color of the largest slice, and then a person icon of that color.

The bottom image illustrates Multi-Member Districts with Proportional Representation with the same starting pie-chart that becomes a pie-chart equally divided between the largest three slices, and then three people icons of those three colors.

If 40% of voters support a party, that party should get 40% of seats.

That’s not radical. That’s math.

And it’s how #ProportionalRepresentation works.

Yes, finishing 1st in an election is too high a bar for smaller parties. We need to move away from winner-take-all elections so that 2nd, 3rd, 4th-place finishes also win seats. Then we'd *all* get fair representation.

Why Electoral Reform is Key to the Abundance Agenda Proportional representation would provide stronger incentives to pursue the ambitious projects that the abundance agenda envisions.

I jump into the abundance discourse in this new post on why the US needs to upgrade its electoral system to proportional representation if it wants to build big and build fairly.
