Sometimes I think about how many times I could boil my electric kettle with that energy and get spooked

OSM is a key piece of infrastructure run as a public good by the best kind of people. Consider donating a little of your money and/or time.

I was assuming 20 more years of rebrands and consultations before building the thing as originally envisaged but for double the price and with some absurd penny wise pound foolish compromise like a random 30 mile unelectrified stretch or something

always so funny to me when people are like β€œhow am I supposed to explain Gay to my kids?” my kid asks me way harder shit all the time. β€œwhy did they build the road this way? why are some people bad?” I don’t know. please ask me about Gay

A cartoon made in response to an Elon Musk tweet that reads β€œWhoever said β€œmoney can’t buy happiness” really knew what they were talking about πŸ˜”β€

The black and white cartoon shows Musk standing against the wind. There is a distant expression on his face and a single tear being blown from his left eye.
He wraps his arms around himself, trying to keep warm. The world is so cruel to him. Punishing him for the meagre crime of hoarding massive amounts of wealth and showing no empathy for the vulnerable. Also, he uses his platform to boost racism, misogyny, and white supremacy but seriously guys who would hold that against a fella?

Next to him a caption reads β€œBeing a shit person is ruining my life”

Yeah that is not how marginal tax rates work. If you earn 100k you have a lot more than 29k take home. Depends on your exact circumstances but it’s more like 60k left even with 2 loans.

The 71% means that if you earn Β£1 -more- you only get 29p of it, but that doesn’t apply to the full salary.

03.02.2026 08:09 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 1

Yeah the silver lining of the current system is that it makes salary sacrifice even more overpowered. I feel bad for those with employers that don’t accommodate it.

🀨Are you saying 100k is not enough to pay for housing? Because I assure you even in the current economy it absolutely is, in any city in the UK. Yes, even if you have a student loan.

It’s frankly insulting that the worlds worst people weren’t meeting in a command center in a volcano wearing ceremonial robes but were all emailing on Hotmail accounts like β€œwant 2 atrosity? With wemen?”

01.02.2026 19:25 β€” πŸ‘ 3227    πŸ” 512    πŸ’¬ 37    πŸ“Œ 12

Yeah if you’re in the middle it becomes an impossible calculation whether it’s worth overpaying or not because you have to make assumptions on not only your future earnings over 30-40 years but also whether any governments over that time period are going to move the goalposts again.

01.02.2026 17:12 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

That 13 years is from a debt payoff calculator and includes the interest going down as you pay off the loan. Fair point on inflation but I think it’s pretty much right, ballpark. And very few will be starting on 100k so it’s all a bit finger in the air anyway as to what size your loan is by then

01.02.2026 17:03 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Depends what you mean by quickly but it’s not as quick as you might expect because the interest scales too. You’d be paying back maybe 6.5-7k per year. If you’ve got 60k of debt you might be paying over 3.5k in interest each year at the current 6.2%. Would still take you a fair while. 13 years ish.

Anyway the real reason IMO is, once one person starts a queue it’s now awkward to undo it so the queue stays. This rarely happened because a very small percentage of people would try to queue. Covid upset the balance because enough people had never been to a bar before at the same time or something.

Yeah I do love the idea of a system that can feed back on its own efficiency (and upgrade opportunities). Seems like an obvious next step from basic smart heating / smart meters etc.

29.01.2026 20:02 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I’m still not sure I understand how much benefit you get from all that though - is the idea that less design/balancing is needed up front and you can come back and upgrade things later if it turns out to be needed? Surely you still need most of the design work for sizing the system anyway?

29.01.2026 16:16 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Seems plausible, especially if you’re willing to wait a while for the system to converge its calibration.

My advice to high street retailers blathering on about β€œfree” car parking is that if they train their customers to think a car is necessary for shopping, they’ll realise that it’s just as easy to drive to that huge out of town retail park or shopping mall instead of.

In fairness if you have CCTV coverage that should have caught the thief entering/leaving with the bike but that doesn’t cover exactly where the bike was locked, you might need to watch the whole period. But they didn’t say that and they could just exclude those specific cases if they wanted

Bilbo looking at his phone top

After all, why not? Why shouldn't I keep it?

You're absolutely right β€” you found it, it's been with you a long while, and it's only natural to feel fond of something that's served you so well, especially when someone like Gandalf suddenly seems to want it for himself.
