I am genuinely terrified everyone will forget, or has already forgotten, how different people were 15-20 years ago. Since then, all technological innovation has worked toward the goal of sapping human attention as a commodity and society is far worse for it.

I'm not the kind of gal who "wouldn't hurt a fly," but I do get pretty sad when the deed must be done.

I love letterboxd because you learn that every day someone out there watches that obscure movie you love.

Trust *this* English PhD in Media Studies. The best game to convince non-gamers that games are art is Pac-Man. If you can convince someone Pac-Man is art, then all games are art, not just the ones that have a high word count or play like an interactive movie.

Video games are not art. Just like tik toks, youtube videos, television, radio, architecture, cinema, the novel, theater, oil paintings, poetry, and sculptures.

The only acceptable art form is cave paintings. Look it up, hun.

9. The desexification of practically all media is terrible. We've had art depicting sex and nudity since the first art was made. The way culture shifted to avoid all depictions of sex is distressing (and disingenuous, because it's only the will of freaks with power) and strips us of our humanity.

8. Many critics seem to go easy on childrens media because it's for kids, but that's so wrong. We should be far more critical of media for young people, harsher than media made for adults! 7. People aren't good at explaining why they like/dislike art. If someone doesn't like something, I trust they don't like it. Still, the moment they open their mouth to start telling you why their explanation is usually awful. Art criticism is invaluable because it gives the voiceless a voice.

6. Almost all major technological innovations of the 21st century [smart phones, social media, LLMs] are not useful and deteriorate human connection. The 20th century had cars, airplanes, cinema, telephone. Revolutionary before/after cultural shifts. What's the before/after of Facebook or Chatgpt?

5. It used to be that certain kinds of movies had needle drops, but nowadays nearly every popular movie has some (or multiple) recognizable licensed song and it's bad. It pulls the viewer out of the experience and weakens a film. We don't need Talking Heads in a Pixar movie.

3. I don't trust the opinions of people who can't identify ways their tastes have changed over time. You are not a monolith. If your tastes aren't changing year to year, it means you're shutting yourself off to new things, and in which case, why should I trust your opinion about new things?

2. People should be forced to watch way more foreign movies. You'll find you have more in common with a Japanese housewife, an Iranian schoolboy, or a French singer than you do with Superman, Harry Potter, or whatever big budget schlock is thrown your way each week.
