14.02.2026 04:44 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0in brief: heroku has adopted a sustaining engineering model i.e. gone into maintenance mode. this was widely interpreted as heroku is over, though that is not strictly true
thanks @johnathan.org for letting me know i was featured on rubyweekly.com/issues/787 as the "not strictly true" link. some hackernews readers were like "but u didnt elaborate on y it's not dead u just talked a lot about what happened". mebe i should have titled it "what happened at heroku"
14.02.2026 01:40 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0i could surely make a post that goes "here are 10 reasons you should not get off Heroku just yet" but i feel very unmotivated to do so, after marc benioff said what he said www.404media.co/marc-benioff... what i care about is all the work generations of ppl worked on and the ppl still there

12.02.2026 00:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0@barbs: Thereβs really a lot to it, I do research in hydrology specifically in water storage and river flow so lmk if you want me to go deeper but itβs a lot to explain in one comment. Basically one of the reasons major human societies are more of a new thing (in the timescale of human life) is because climate and the water cycle was extremely volatile (normal). Which is why ancient humans were mainly nomadic, with temporary camps and small groups, etc. Then we entered a rare period of climate stability (Holocene) were humans were able to start farming, making settlements, the population increases, etc. So throughout this time humans have created our systems based on this baseline. But now the water cycle is getting faster due to lots of reasons (mostly humans) and human demand cannot rely effectively on this new cycle pace. An example for why a faster water cycle isnβt good for modern human society is because there is more moisture in the air leading to heavier and faster rainfall. The ground struggles to absorb this type and water runs off instead of renewing a water storage source. The runoff can cause flooding and less ground water recharge. Itβs one of the reasons why droughts and floods are so associated.
