The language of 'same-sex attraction' is not a neutral descriptor. It emerges out of American Christian gay conversion circles, and it exists to attempt to create deny that being gay can be part of someone's identity, as well as attempting to pathologise sexuality.

Every single person involved in this hate campaign and everyone who has supported them - Anas Sarwar, for example - needs to be run out of public life the way they've run Dr Upton out the NHS. Being trans isn't a risk factor for people around you; this obsessive hate absolutely is.

I was editing a chemistry paper recently and they'd used the R slur meaning, to inhibit a reaction. it isn't even pronounced the same, eh vs ee on first syllable. as soon as I pointed out that it is spelled the same as the slur they were like, oop good catch thanks, and changed it. not hard!

I’m also personally of the opinion that dehumanizing language doesn’t have a place in our work. It has a way of spiraling until you wind up a hundred years on using words like “cabal” without realizing that is quite hurtful. I’d prefer not to be that Trojan horse for Nazi rhetoric, thanks.

It is also not something we should be using on right wingers. Why?

Well, not because I am worried about their feelings. Because there’s tons of research showing that if you start using dehumanizing language even ironically, it becomes easier and easier to access.
