(Though I have seen some people suggest they’re OTT for the average traveller, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

The places you want to look for tips on this are cabin crew forums and subreddits. Unsurprisingly, they have a lot of experience with and opinions about suitcases.

I can’t personally vouch for any of this, but being a bit of an aviation nerd, I actually have some info that might be helpful. From what I’ve picked up, a lot of flight crew use and recommend Travelpro (particularly their FlightCrew line). Apparently, they’re expensive but really good.

Forgot this isn’t Reddit and eagerly clicked on this expecting Mac vs. PC beef, instead I got a bunch of people helpfully answering the question. Bitterly disappointed.

Just to be very clear: I’m not saying your comment was based on race, I understand the word foreign can be used in ways other than to mean ‘not from this country’. But in the current climate, that’s how your reply initially read. If not for your profile, I would have concluded you might be racist.

Saying that makes you sound like a racist. Looking at your profile I suspect you aren’t, but ‘London, the city famously far more diverse than the rest of the country, is foreign to me’ sounds *really* dodgy.

It’s just a step away from ‘London isn’t British anymore’ nonsense.

Think James was saying that whenever they realise their error, it'll get edited out and that version will replace the one that went out live - which is currently the one available on iPlayer.

Urban Dictionary: n-tower n-tower: A chain of one letter comments and/or images containing one [conspicuous] letter by different users on [social media], that when viewed from top to...

While it doesn't completely rule that out, I think the fact that 'N towers' (AKA spelling out the n-word in this way) are an established thing somewhat weakens that defence.

Apologies if I'm misunderstanding you, but are you suggesting that sites will (or should?) block connections from outside the UK if they are using an account registered with the UK phone number?

(If you are, I disagree, but want to be clear on what you're saying before claiming that you're wrong!)

I just think the commonly cited trade offs are largely overstated and pretty outdated. You may disagree, that’s fine, but let’s be honest about what that disagreement is about.

Not a big fan of that argument, as it forces anyone ‘who may be affected by the trade offs’ into a box. For it to be true, they must all agree with you.

That’s a bit messed up. It’s also just wrong.

For instance, there are reasons why the trade offs as you would likely define them might affect me.

Didn't know about the 'me' alias - handy! You may already know this, but for anyone who feels like clicking a button instead, one that performs the same function can be found here:

Nor, I suspect, will we achieve immortality in that timeframe. So your point has little bearing on the one above.

(And if we do, then I’d say all bets are off on the rate of technological change, including that needed for interplanetary space travel.)

Why is someone having the position 'immortality, given the right conditions, would be good' is so surprising?

It's not like it's a particularly uncommon view.

(Not trying to start an argument - just genuinely curious as to why you were shocked by that!)

I now can't get that thought out of my brain. The more I look at the photo, the more I think it looks like he's just been added in.

Always enjoy when real pictures look fake.

Maybe it's all the same picture, and he's been photoshopped in with someone else's hand.

I'd noticed this a while back, but was reminded of it earlier when I read a post from someone who uses a wheelchair saying the same thing.

Then there's the fact that seemingly every time Shirley has a significant role, the fact that she's disabled is highlighted, or even made a plot point.

I get it's supposed to be good representation, but I'd go mad if the fact an autistic character was autistic was brought up every time they appear.

Exciting stuff!

Daybridge thinks it’s time we reimagined digital calendars Calendar apps are fine for work — but would you send your date a calendar invite?

This was where I head about it: www.theverge.com/2022/8/2/232...

Was longer ago than I realised, but still seems to be a thing, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Think that’s pretty much exactly what @daybridge.com is supposed to be (when it comes out).

IIRC the pitch was something like ‘social media, but a calendar’

The WORLD WIDE WEB was invented in Switzerland (by a Brit), the INTERNET was not invented there.

I demand a full apology from Eurovision, the BBC, and the nation of Switzerland.

'So here’s why Blue Labour is not the answer this time – and what the government instead about migration.'

Either my dyslexia is playing up (quite possible), or the second half of this sentence is missing a word or two. (Right before the 'Why it won’t work' heading.)

That last point is important - it was a misogynistic experiment, and whatever he has claimed since, the end result was publicity for his business. It's not like he was a really young either, he was 30 at the time. So of course it's relevant to his suitability to lead the Greens.

13.05.2025 22:23 — 👍 5    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Not everything is a conspiracy to try to sabotage the Greens.

People are just talking about this because 1) it's pretty amusing and 2) many of his supporters keep misrepresenting the substance of it. The latter is important, because (as detailed above) the story isn't a complete nothingburger.

Frankly, I prefer our style of exams.

For some subjects, that means essays, though you aren't forced to take them beyond GCSE (so age 16). And for stuff like maths, not using scantron tests means you can get marks for working out. Which feels fairer.

08.05.2025 11:32 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Still, I feel the accusation of promoting eugenics rather extreme and unnecessary.

On the scantron point, I've got to be honest, I had to double-check what they were. We don't really use them in the UK, and I think I've only sat two. (Both of which were admissions tests of some kind or another.)

Apologies for the delayed response.

I felt it was quite clear, given the context, that Daniel was talking about banning computers that had access to GenAI-powered tools from exams. I acknowledge that for someone with experience of an earlier era of education, this may have seemed less obvious.

(In fact, I think you covered all the ones I've had, except 'scribe', which I had back in primary school.)

Finally, to be clear, the reason I decided to respond to the original reply was because they'd accused OP of eugenics. That's a very serious accusation, and not one I felt was well-founded.
