The CEO of a a multi-trillion dollar company went to the White House, openly handed the US president a gift made of gold, and his company got a special exemption to tariffs the president has illegally imposed.

Also, the Founders took bribery so seriously the Constitution bans it 3 separate times.

This is an example where the problem is not so much the capabilities of LLMs as it is the fact that we have independently normalized a widespread culture of acceptable lying

We've become so accustomed to lawbreaking that this probably won't ripple much, but it is important not to forget that firing the IRS Commissioner for refusing to break the law--if that's in fact what happened here--would and should prompt immediate articles of impeachment in any other presidency.

we are extremely fortunate that no CDC workers were shot yesterday in the attack targeting them. around a dozen floors in the headquarters buildings had windows pierced by bullets.

This is where Columbia, Brown, Penn have gotten us. If this isn't stopped, it's just one institution after another paying tributes to the crown. Either it stops or we're done for and the "we" isn't just higher ed, it's everybody.

The White House is taking new steps to undermine every international student at our universities.

It has approved a new rule restricting student visas to 4 years max. That's not long enough for PhD students, or about half of undergrads, to finish their degree.

Likely to enter force within days.

OK, so this is objectively racist in the purest sense. The ONLY reason to do this is to penalize black and brown people for being black and brown. Replace "race" with any other measure of diversity on a college campus to see why. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/07/u...

"We're all throwing dildos at women athletes to promote our memecoin" really puts a fine point on not just how sexist, mean and stupid so much of right now is, but also the grim degree to which we're just inundated with Stuff a 15-Year-Old Dipshit Would Think is Cool. A confederacy of Beavises.

This is the most infuriatingly witless talking point. No history is โ€œerasedโ€ by the removal of a monument. What he means is โ€œwe want to celebrate and honor racism,โ€ but that sounds bad, so weโ€™re supposed to pretend this illiterate goon has some deep interest in the study of history.

I hope this helps universities see why itโ€™s dumb to โ€œmake a deal.โ€ As the EO shows, Trump wants to destroy successful American R1s and reprogram funds as he sees fit, regardless of the law. He is not a reliable counterparty. Fighting him is scary, but itโ€™s the only path to secure funding. (5/5)

Under director Jay Bhattacharya, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) appears to be repurposing a project that Congress shot down last year, the note says. That project, which NIH abandoned amid pressure from Congress, would have amassed huge amounts of personal data from Americans with little oversight. NIH had planned, through contractors, to vacuum up information from phone providers, wearable device companies, health insurers, medical records keepers, and government agencies in order to create a โ€œreal-world data platformโ€ for monitoring Alzheimerโ€™s disease.

Though ambitious, the project was poorly managed, according to a 2024 report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), a legislative branch watchdog agency. It was at risk of failing to manage appropriately hundreds of millions of dollars in spending, per the report, and it raised a host of privacy concerns around the protection of government-collected data.

In part because of the findings of that GAO report, Congress expressed โ€œserious reservationsโ€ about the NIH effort, according to the Appropriations Committee document released last week. NIH would eventually shut down the project.

In last weekโ€™s little-noticed note, which was buried 150 pages into a document laying out the health agenciesโ€™ funding for the coming fiscal year, Senate Appropriations Committee staffers expressed a fresh concern: NIH is reviving the same program under a different name, despite Congressโ€™ earlier objections. This time, itโ€™s to study autism, the report said.

Once you're accessing "information from phone providers, wearable device companies, health insurers, medical records keepers, and government agencies in order to create a 'real-world data platform'" you aren't tracking anonymized diagnostic data. You're tracking people.

Improving Oversight of Federal Grantmaking By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and to improve the process of Federal

One more effort to politicize federal grantmaking.
*Grants must by approved by a political appointee, working with OMB.
*"Discretionary awards must, where applicable, demonstrably advance the Presidentโ€™s policy priorities."
*Cannot "promote anti-American values"

Trump rants about ordering a new census excluding the undocumented population

A depressing number of news outlets are reporting this without mentioning the minor detail that it would be unconstitutional.
