ππ³πΏ I really enjoy all of Miriam Toewsβ books. She often explores themes of mental health, Mennonite experiences, and family, both given and chosen. She also manages to be funny and serious without sacrificing either! Women Talking is quite different but v important. An author Iβll always read!

π³πΏπ Just finished this very good memoir. Young writer who interviews her dad, a rural GP. But itβs more than that and hopeful despite content.

Man in light blue shirt attacks the camera holder with a metal flag pole.
White man in black cap and light blue shirt.
Today in TΔmaki, an Israel supporter crashed a peaceful demonstration in support of Palestine. He grabbed a flag off a protestor, threw the flag away and then used the metal pole to attack my friend in the face. Police dogs were trying to track him down tonight. Please share these photos of him.

βSo much violence and lack waiting on the other end of the violence and lack that people poured out of the South to escape, and still they kept believing there was someplace in this country where they could be Black and be safe and make a home.β

A response to the apparent shortage of Aotearoa novels being taught in our high schools.
Nicole writes so well and with brilliant insight in this important piece on why schools insist on teaching the same books decade after decade, and why that needs to change thespinoff.co.nz/books/25-10-...

'Pay It Forward' is a GOOD BOOKS initiative where our customers can buy book vouchers for very deserving local schools.
The two schools that benefit are Mt Cook School (up the road from the shop) and Titiro Whakamua Hutt Valley Teen Parent School.
Twice a year, we divvy up the credit equally for the schools to spend on books for their students, all thanks to the generosity and kindness of GOOD BOOKS customers!
Visit us in store or see our website to buy a Pay It Forward voucher or find out more.

An illustration of a grandmother and a small child entering a public library with the words βjust a building with some books in itβ. The roof of the library is a book on its side with an explosion of colour and beauty to symbolise knowledge, curiosity and creativity.
Christchurch! Please email your local councillor to let them know how much our small community libraries are valued. They are not, as our mayor describes them, βjust a building with some books in it.β The council is considering closing small libraries to cut costs. Please share.
