Where a helmet usually only protects against impact trauma. Some expensive new ones do claim to protect against rotational trauma.

But not having to wear or take protective equipment has been found to increase cycling uptake and weight of numbers making them expected on the streets lowers risk.

The only reasons to need a helmet are because traffic may hit you at speed and thus you head but the window or if you are frequently getting over 15-20mph.

For some people at lower speeds or with weaker necks it can actually increase the chance of brain damage from rotationmal trauma.
