You can have Romance (which needs a HEA/HFN) or you can have a Love Story (which doesn't). I will read either but I need to know in advance if it ends in tradegy.

As to romantic context, it needs to *drive* the sub-plot, so I would say a good 40%+ of the story. Other readers' opinions may vary.

READ romance.

Lots of it! In all its various subgenres and flavors, by authors old and new (but mostly new if you’re going to choose).

It’s nearly impossible to write a good genre romance without knowing and loving the genre.
