This Observer revelation about The Salt Path is interesting, not least for raising the question: to what extent do book publishers have an obligation to establish the authenticity of a memoir?

This is George Orwell's cottage in Wallington, just outside Baldock. He wrote Animal Farm here and got married in the local church. The real Manor Farm is just up the lane

Guardian & Observer journalists are on strike again today & tomorrow.
We believe we have a duty to tell readers the truth. Which is that this deal sucks. Itβs bad for the Obs, bad for the Guardian. Bad for journalism.

Today is the Observerβs 233rd birthday. And the first of 4 strike days. I grew up in South Wales in the shadow of the minersβ strike. Extraordinary to be joining a picket line outside what I believed was my liberal progressive news org all these years later.

Men's World Cup: FIFA produces 'astonishing whitewash' of Saudi Arabia's human rights record
FIFA provided Saudi Arabia a βmediumβ risk rating for human rights in its evaluation of its bid for the 2034 World Cup
From start to finish, FIFA's approach to human rights standards in the 2030 and 2034 bidding processes has been a sham.
And its callous disregard for workers in ignoring its own report on compensation is scandalous.
