Random: I have a feeling that social mediarologists and modelologists are about to flood my timeline with misguided hurricane posts. The models are starting to heat up with projected hurricane activity as we head into the more active part of the Atlantic season. Consider the source!

You know, if MLB invested so much money to play this game in Bristol Motor Speedway tonight, you’d think they could have hired a meteorologist to provide forecast guidance. #JustSaying

For the first time since July 5, 2012, Atlanta International Airport has recorded a temperature of at least 100Β°F during the month of July. It's actually surprisingly hard for Atlanta to observe triple-digit heat because of its relatively high elevation of over 1,000 feet ASL.

Time series plot May 1-Sept 30 of the daily percent area of the Greenland Ice Sheet with melting conditions. Shown are the smoothed interquartile range, the maximum daily values 1979-2024 with some of the peaks annotated, and the 2025 daily melt area through July 16.

Daily melt area on the Greenland Ice Sheet this summer has been quite variable, with a few days when melt occurred over a larger area than usual in NSIDC data. Overall, average melt area thru mid-July is notably lower than the 1991-2020 average. #Arctic #Climate #Greenland @ruthmottram.bsky.social

Love the Hand and Shepherd (2009) paper! One of the reasons I got so involved in this area of research.

I think the weather enterprise is going to have a big and unnecessary fight on our hands regarding all of this weather modification nonsense. It has now penetrated to the political level in several states and will likely continue to spread like a virus. Time to start developing a vaccine…oh wait…

The Texas Hill Country floods have now caused more fatalities (over 100) than Hurricane Harvey or Hurricane Helene. This is a good reminder that unnamed weather systems can be just as impactful and deadly as named hurricanes.

Another extreme rainfall and flooding event took place yesterday. Check out this map of central North Carolina showing 1-day rainfall totals with white pixels exceeding a 1,000-year average recurrence interval. A total of 9 pixels located east of Burlington exceeded this exceptional return period!

Here's a map I created that shows 3-day precipitation totals (spanning 1200 UTC on July 4th through 1200 UTC on July 6th) across the Texas Hill Country, with white pixels indicating totals that exceeded their 100-year average recurrence interval according to NOAA Atlas 14.

Catastrophic Flooding In Texas - Were There Warnings? Deadly flooding in the flash flood alley of Texas is raising questions about warnings. Here's a preliminary (but not conslusive) analysis.

My deep dive on whether there were adequate weather warnings for the catastrophic flooding in Texas. Mentions Alan Gerard Balanced Weather and Jordan McLeod. I am really interested in your thoughts on my take.

Why A Massive Lightning Strike In South Carolina Was So Dangerous 20 people were injured in a massive lightning strike in South Carolina this week. Witnesses say it came "from the blue" without rainfall. Our experts explain.

Did you hear about 20 people injured yesterday in a "bolt from blue" lightning strike while at a lakefront beach park near Columbia, SC? My breakdown of what may have happened and cautionary notes about summer lightning. Thanks Jordan McLeod, South Carolina Weather

It’s over.

Congrats to OKC for an epic championship, but there is unfortunately an asterisk next to it due to Haliburton’s injury.

Y'all, I finally figured out how to compile and run the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model on my Mac. It took countless hours, but it was well worth the effort. Shout out to ChatGPT for helping me along the way because I could not have done it without some AI assistance!

Heads up Atlanta and Athens area friends: Some severe storms are heading your way from the northwest! These northwest flow severe storms are capable of producing strong winds and large hail. The large hail is probably the biggest hazard.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Braves game is delayed soon.

What do we think, meteorological community? Is #StormEowyn a traditional Norwegian cyclone as advertised by NOAA (left) or a Shapiro-Keyser cyclone as shown by the UK Met Office (right)? I lean towards the latter.

PSA: If you’re looking for a good series to watch and have access to Peacock, check out the new release called Lockerbie. It’s a crime series about the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, back in 1988. Really well done!

Hi Geoff! Happy to share the code! Let me know your email address, and I will send you a copy. Yes, I agree that NOHRSC's product is not perfect, but it does provide a nice estimate of snowfall at a high spatial resolution.

It's no exaggeration to say today brought a truly historical weather event to the Gulf Coast - lots of places all the way down to the water got over 6-8 inches of snow, shattering records going as far back as 1895 in some places.

Let's review what caused this historic event 🧡
