I’m a US citizen living and working in Europe as a scientific researcher, and I told my partner last night that we should avoid going back at all costs. This was before the news of a French researcher being detained came out. It sucks because I miss my family, I guess they should come here

Your job is to improve the scientific quality and integrity of a paper and make suggestions to solidify conclusions, not to gatekeep and make authors jump through unnecessary hoops to reach some invisible bar you’ve set in order to stroke your ego! we’ve all got it tough, don’t make worse

And yesterday I got an email from the university that some of the benefits I was apparently owed from 2024 weren’t paid correctly, so I’ll randomly get an extra fee from them. Such a stark contrast of what I’m used to in the States

My favorite part about living in Austria is that at random times I’ll get a letter saying “oops we owe you money!” from the electric company, employer, landlord, etc. My landlord randomly lowered my rent by €50/month and then sent me back the difference. Jarring as an American (in a good way)
