Reading the page you posted it's not quite that bad - if you're under the "automatically a UK citizen" elements at the top you just apply for a passport as normal, the 1200 quid fee applies if you don't automatically qualify.

Friend of mine automatically got German citizenship by providing evidence that one of her direct ancestors was Jewish and had fled Germany under Hitler.

The British fees for this kind of thing always blindside me, they're insane.

However, previously I would have had to make a declaration that I had renounced UK citizenship; lying at this point _could_ later be taken as justification for withdrawing my German citizenship, so just letting the passport lapse would not be sufficient.

I didn't have to in the end - Germany changed the law in 2024 to permit easier dual citizenship, and I applied under that so I could keep UK as well.

Met some colleagues earlier this week who didn't have to go through passport control leaving the UK to come to Germany, for example.

Does the UK actually track these data these days, though? The absence of even vaguely accurate exit data has been a significant problem for the UK for a long time.

Although as ever there will be a fuss about "forcing" people from NI to choose or lose; no idea how this can be handled sensibly.

The modern approach, as much as there is one, is to permit dual citizenship but also insist on entering a country that you have citizenship of on the passport of that citizenship. It's a very common approach and the UK is not being an outlier by insisting on it here.

Under the previous law where Germany didn't allow dual citizenship with non-EU countries I was unofficially told "Go ahead and renounce it [UK citizenship], it's easy to get back if you claim the renunciation was forced upon you" but that always sounded like a dodgy loophole to rely on.

I think a lot of people have skated along on countries being relaxed about some of the rules up to now but now are going to be forced to make a proper choice and they don't like it.
