bright pink puffs of clouds filling the sky

when beautiful hearts break
wide openβ€”

the sky doesn't dim
it opens wide,
holding their emotions

filling it with colorβ€”
alive, aching,
bright and luminous

Sunset of orange clouds and a yellow and blue sky backlighting trees and a power line.

Sunset behind a mobile home sale lot. Sky transitions from yellow on the horizon, to orange and purple clouds, to a vast pale purple sky.

Five ways NCAR has changed our understanding of weather (& saved lives)

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), an operational research center crucial to furthering our understanding of weather and helping to save lives and property, is at risk of being dismantled. We must not let that happen.

2025 "Cone of Uncertainty" Update & Refresher Updates and summaries on tropical Atlantic activity... including easterly waves, tropical storms, subtropical storms, and hurricanes.

Remember that the cone is not ever to be used to see where impacts will be experienced. The cone only shows where the center of the storm could track with a historical 2/3 probability.

Oof yeah... this is why I really like the experimental cone that shades watches/warnings over land. I'm hoping wider use of that format will improve public understanding of spatial risk

I agree! I always glance right over it so I bet the general public isn't reading it either

Excellent and very important reminder for those not familiar with the NHC forecast graphic! I have seen way too many people mess up their explanation and interpretation of the cone...

Distant hurricanes can be deadly. Hurricanes that are far away can still create deadly rip currents and waves. Never assume that the ocean is safe, even if the weather is nice. For maximum safety, swim near a lifeguard. Check the forecast before you go. weather.gov/beach
