Heinrich’s day was a usual one, he was warming up at rugby training with his club.

He remembers feeling a cold chill travel up his neck, feeling breathless and needing to take a knee, and feeling a thud. Heinrich was in cardiac arrest.

An AED is a safe and simple-to-use device, used to restart the heart during cardiac arrest. They are lifesaving devices, and you can’t accidentally shock someone.

CPR alone is not enough, you need a shock from an AED to restart a heart.

Around 2000 people a year experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Aotearoa. If you find someone unresponsive and not breathing normally:

Call 111
Start CPR by pushing Hard and Fast in the middle of the chest
Shock the heart with an AED ASAP
