The Luddites were a reactionary movement in the most immediate, straightforward sense — they desired a retvrn to an older system unruled by the burgeoning technological innovations of their era. But more importantly, They Did Not Win. And history swept them away under the wave of its forces.

The problem is not technology nor even specific technologies — there is no evil implicit to a technology. What imbues a technology with political content is the economic system of production which organizes that technology — of which technology is necessarily intertwined with.

I often introduce myself to people with a pseudo-phonetic of my name: “Sizhen, like the -cision in incision.” I did not ask to be a knife. I was made this way by others. Things were taken away from my form until what remained was sharp and wicked. It is my duty to know where to point that edge.

To be “incisive,” as in, to “incise,” to blade away that which is obfuscatory from that which clarifies and speaks the truth — is that not a noble pursuit, or, if not noble, then perhaps the least abominable? A craft is honed — in the same way as a blade — harrowed & narrowed & pared away, reduced, until it becomes more effective as an edge — a tool for separation, distinction, identification, classification. “Art”, that is, communicative technology, is designed only for communication — not for a particular valence of communication. In a world which fuels itself with slaughter and blood, in a nation where we are all vampires — what is left to communicate but horror, but outrage, but a desperate plea?

We peeled back the curtain from art and saw something beyond beauty — machines and tools for any infinite number of aspirations, weapons which could be used to fight for justice — we peeled back the curtain from ideology and saw nothing but physical mechanisms for brutality and horror.

How can I aspire towards the generation of “beauty,” a project which contributes to a smug ideological / cultural / superstructural self-satisfaction with grim and bloody status quos — when it feels so urgent to horrify and disturb the complacent and comfortable from their leatherplush thrones?

Frankly “beauty” feels like such a violently restrictive aspiration for the universal and immanent process of artmaking. Both in the positive sense — we should feel empowered to aspire to things separate from & orthogonal to beauty — and the negative — what right do we have to beauty, here and now?

Something about the implicit imprecision and halting but naively confident experimentation implicit to exploring a new medium feels addictively freeing. It feels like the discovery of a new world free of the prison of convention and self-critique and aspiration.

I’ve honestly just been kind of tired of the whole circuit. It’s so hard to find artists and journals of integrity in general to use as metrics to aspire towards. Everything feels cynical. I’ve found great joy in the childlike wonder of exploring new mediums.

Separations which, when struck, chip and flake with design, honing them to an edge better suited for violence / separation / identity-creation / naming / distinction / analysis.

Nora Hikari and Sizhens were / are both experiments, in the same way all identity is, but with more intentionality behind their construction, more design implicit to the character therein. These entities are less “personas” and closer to “performance ARGs” perhaps. Partitions.
