This is a crock of shit. The ACA already prohibits federal dollars from being used to pay for abortion.
ACA plans which cover abortion even include a separate $1/mo fee which the insurance carriers have to be kept segregated from the rest of their revenue in a separate bank account.
Iโm serious.

A giant stack of papers, about 1/2 the size of an apple, on a counter.
Are we doing "The ACA Sucks" Discourse again?
I'm going to guess most people hating on it from the left have never received a hospital bill the size of book; I put the apple there for scale.
That's the $1.3 million bill my kid incurred in his first ~94 days. Why does that make me respect the ACA?

Anyway, what we're talking about is, this is what you wrote about one of the most important legislative achievements since the 1960s, which is responsible for over 40 million Americans currently having health care.
And yet, NYT is somehow paying you to be an economics reporter. This is not normal.

The House has passed the giant GOP tax and budget bill - next stop is the White House.
The final vote was 218-214.
2 GOP lawmakers voted 'No' - Massie KY and Fitzpatrick PA.
No Dems voted for the bill.

Can you help me understand why funding violates the Byrd rule? I get why the non-Hyde abortion language was struck but funding CSR seems very germane to the budget.

Assuming the CBOโs interpretation is correct, itโs an interesting policy choice that the GOP would effectively be giving more subsidy money (in the form of APTC) to states if they mandate abortion coverage.

Iโm thinking of how one would structure a database of state policy decisions affecting the ACA. I.e. Medicaid expansion enactment date, FFM v SBM dates, new EHBs, 1332 reinsurance, silver loading rules, etc. What other kinds of policy data points am I missing?
05.06.2025 09:42 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
The way I read the bill was that it was just codifying that CSRs couldnโt be used for non-Hyde abortion services, not that in those states, CSR isnโt funded at all. But I trust CBO knows how to read a bill better than I do.
05.06.2025 09:39 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Reading the CBO estimates on BBB and this part surprised me: it seems to me theyโre saying CSRs wouldnโt be funded in states where non-Hyde abortion is required to be covered, so silver loading would continue.
05.06.2025 09:38 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Since non-Hyde abortion isnโt an EHB I assume it wasnโt covered before either.
