It’s the maximally optimistic scenario, so I’m not surprised it’s popular: it would mean the clouds will part and things will suddenly improve without much further ado. Any alternative looks much less comfortable.

I'm mostly just surprised that what you've seen of peoples' attitudes is so different to what I've seen; I've actually been completely fine with Signal and if anything it's my messaging app of choice even if it doesn't cope quite so well with big groups.
