Anchor Terrace on Southwark Bridge Road. Haven’t quite worked out whether it was the end one or not - I think not, but it’s possible they took liberties when filming. Anyway, it’s a rather nice late Georgian terrace, and the only reason I know is that wikipedia mentioned that the This Life house was in South London, and it doesn’t look very South London at all (unless maybe you count Camberwell?) so obvs I had to go look it up. I rather doubt a bunch of dramatic twentysomethings could afford it now.

Started a rewatch of This Life over the weekend and then randomly went past where it was filmed today.

(Was worried it wouldn’t have aged well but on s1e3 so far and it still holds up?)

Mixed feels about Feel The Sound at the Barbican, but easily the best was Max Cooper’s β€œReflections of being”: sit on subwoofer seats while you watch a video which exactly captures that moment ~15m post-disco-poo when you confront all the euphoria and anxiety of the world in an ultra HD rush

I am plenty nostalgic for the 90s but every waking moment since then I’ve been grateful that I’ve not had to touch fucking bitplane displays

First and to a lesser degree second generation immigrants taking an approach of β€œI will do whatever I can to fit in, up to and including adopting the weird local racism” is absolutely a thing

This was AMAZING! I took advantage of mastodon's longer character limits to write about it there: social.earth.li/notice/Awnv1...

A honey centrifuge: a big white metal cylinder with four honey frames fixed inside. Someone is spinning it with a hand crank at the side.

An empty frame of honey: you can nearly see through the hexagons to the other side.

Extraction day! We took out the surplus honey boxes leaving plenty to see the bees through winter, sliced off the wax cap, and centrifuged the honey out.

No photograph can even slightly capture how sticky everything is.

IME the optimum (honed on years of hungover rowers at 0530) is β€œOn three: one, two, THREE!”. Like most coxing: set expectations, set a rhythm, yell when you want the thing to happen.

also adults of a certain vintage would have remembered him as β€œfamous cool DJ” and his work in Young Persons’ TV wouldn’t have seemed that unnatural, even though to the actual kids he was just a weird creepy old man

I quite like this trend of taking bits of the python/js ecosystems and making them not suck by rewriting in rust yet also everyone seems cool with it? I’ve found uv/pixi very hard to put down once tried, but python has always coexisted with other languages; fascinating to see it happening in js

You'll never be able to completely eradicate VPNs since someone could always set up a covert radio link across the Channel or something. But you can keep making it more of a pain in the arse, to the point of diminishing returns.

(turns out that weird line "I saw the first men of wood, the cisterns that turned against the men, the dogs that ravaged their faces" is in fact a reference to the Popul Vuh; I'm still finding new corridors in the labyrinth some thirty years since I first set foot in it)

you can get a good steer on how experienced a programmer someone is by saying β€œtell me about how you write code to handle dates” and observing how long and bitter their response is

it's brilliant, isn't it? Also the community (type "splore") is just full of amazing dorky game ideas (eg "try to sniff as many flowers as you can without inhaling a bee") like the insane stuff on coverdisks back in the day before the industry went mega professional

I made a cool stripy keyring out of laminated acrylic which I'd carefully designed to show the resistor colour code - good looking AND practical!! - and he took it to display for parents' evening and then he lost it and by god I will resent this to my dying day
