State Rep Scott Bottoms (R) says he tipped off the FBI to his claims of pedophile rings at the Colorado State Capitol three years ago. Then his story about the FBI shifted. I asked him about that. He responded with insults.

Rudiments of National Knowledge, Presented to the Youth of the United States, and to Enquiring Foreigners|Paperback "Rudiments of National Knowledge" offers a fascinating glimpse into the foundational principles deemed essential for young citizens of the early United States. Written by Joseph Churchman, this volume...

You can still buy the book, or a replica of it. One that "may contain missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks" so it's true to the original, I guess

Screenshot from Churchman's book: "The Author, retaining very little recollection of the formal rules of grammar, partially studied in his youth, does not presume to claim exemption from occasional error in the construction of his language; which is merely the result of habit combined with the exercise of an imperfect judgment. If the eye of criticism should detect faults, both in grammatical construction and punctuation, he will not be disappointed. He has himself observed imperfections in both these respects too late for correction in the present edition,β€”which, however he must do himself the justice to attribute, in some part, to the fatigues attendant on a continual course of indisposition during the progress of printing. Not being vainly desirous of appearing personally before the public, he has caused entry in the office to be made in the name of a youthful friend; on whom, though legally constituted a representative of the Author, with relation to the property of the work, no responsibility will rest on account of its imperfections."

At least Churchman forewarded the book with a disclaimer?

Ok, so he's ok with criticism. And he was sick while the book was being printed.

Not to his credit, is this where the lionization of Columbus began?

The idea of the Eagle Map, like the book overall, was to instill a sense of patriotism and love of country in a generation 3x removed from the Revolutionary War

To Churchman's credit, he says he wrote it so the "efficient citizens" doing manual labor could "reason, reflect, and converse" on topics

Apparently maps were not used much in teaching geography, and this marked a step forward (per Slate), although the Eagle Map itself quickly became obsolete as states and borders shifted

An old, sepia-colored map of the early United States (the left half of the continent trails off into nothing) with an eagle sketched over the rough shape of the eastern states: talons atop florida, beak as Cape Cod, tail fluffing back to Louisiana and the Appalachains forming the mark where the wings begin to stretch back.

Found the Library of Congress "American Revolution and Founding Washington" free to use and reuse collection and fell down the rabbit hole of the Eagle Map
