Today I learned that the proto-Slavic word for forest is totally different from BCS “šuma,” which may instead be a paleo-Balkan borrowing with a cognate in modern Albanian.

Green Beret Anthony Agular recounts how a 5-year-old Palestinian kissed his hands to thank him for the food Agular gave him
Seconds later, Israeli soldiers shot and killed the starving child
ISIS prisoners were treated with more dignity than these children, Agular says
It is not possible to find the words for this.

Some of the bottles of rice and formula and flour Egyptians threw into the sea have actually made it to Gaza - now people in Cyprus and Lebanon are joining the effort, with scientists from all over the world virtually assisting them in figuring the time and location to do so based on the currents. 💚

Chartbook 400: Murder not crisis - Why Israel's starvation of Gaza is exceptional in a global context.
For many months, it has been beyond reasonable doubt that the Israeli government, the Israeli military, sections of Israeli politics and society as well as their aiders and abetters abroad, have been ...
"Death by starvation in Gaza is not the collateral, unintended consequence of an… anonymous, amorphous crisis. It is the results of deliberate policy on the part of the Israeli government, bent on using the resources of a highly sophisticated state to render Palestinian life in Gaza impossible."

Yeah, I know it’s a rhetorical point. But I don’t understand why some commentators are so eager to relativize the Bosnian genocide to make a point re: Gaza. Not least because Serb forces committed identical atrocities and their ideological descendants today are enthusiastic cheerleaders for Israel.

Just heard @mehdirhasan.bsky.social say re: Gaza: “we’d have to exhume Milošević’s body and apologize to him for trying him as a war criminal if we don’t try all the people involved in this crime.”
Counterpoint: we actually don’t need to apologize to Milošević under any circumstances.

And, I will never stop pointing out, the international decision to retain RS within the postwar Bosnian constitutional setup was a conscious choice. It was not an unfortunate compromise that had to be accepted to bring peace, they could have insisted on its abolition even in 1995. They wanted it.

There is no 'remembering Srebrenica' without remembering the basic political reality that the West rewarded the perpetrators with almost half of Bosnian territory. The genocide is not resolved, it's not the past. The sheer existence of 'RS' is a continuation of the genocide.

Philosopher Boris Buden just wrote a savage critique of the Thompson concert in Zagreb attended by half a million people and soaked in fascism & racism.
He calls it what it is: a mirror of Europe’s militarism, hypocrisy, and descent into moral collapse. Read it via Google Translate. It hits hard.

I think it’s worse than that? His comparison seems to be between ethnic Germans who had to forcibly flee their homes in Gdansk at the end of WW2 to Palestinians in 1948. Which, unfortunately, would not be the first time I’ve seen this analogy from his ilk.

Bosnian Serb secessionists have brought American far-right blogger Curtis Yarvin to Banja Luka, convinced him that the RS entity is a “small country, determined to stay independent.” It’s literally a sub-national administrative region w/in BiH that was never independent. You’re in Bosnia, guy.

PSA—Do not review books for the International Journal of Comparative Sociology. They asked me to review a book, I spent quite a bit of my time reading and writing it up, only for IJCS book review editor Lucas Lopez Arrastia to tell me that editors couldn't contact me, so they pulled my review. It's low key exasperating that so many opponents of Trump have uncritically embraced the "TACO" label. Yeah, it obviously gets under his skin, but it's also basically goading him on to follow through on whatever God-awful policy he had in mind, so… seems like a bad idea? Let the man chicken out!

There may be a historical analogy to be drawn between Serbia-Kosovo and Israel-Palestine, but not one that Schumer or Maher would particularly like.

Serbische Polizei testete Schallkanone 2023 zuerst an Geflüchteten
