I am forced to admit, though, I’m enjoying Maverick WAY more than the original Top Gun.

Hell YES she is. I watched multiple seasons of a not-great Australian detective show just for her and I have no regrets.

Cowards! The original Top Gun would have racked focus to Jon Hamm’s ass as he walked away from that beach scene and you all know it! 😂

I think it’s the dress whites, honestly. Yes the dog fights are sexy, and yes there was all the flexing and the sweating and the taking off of shirts. But honestly, no one is straight when they’re wearing the dress whites.

It was, indeed, very very gay, I will give you that! I can’t remember when, exactly, but my brain chimed in with a chorus of “In the Navy!” at least twice.

If there was any part of me that had any interest in testosterone whatsoever, I would have been very well served.

(Not a judgement! Just my weird taste.)

The list of 80s movies I somehow missed is long and shocking. I’m slowly catching up as things appear on streaming.

But also, if the movies don’t centre women I find it very hard to care, which is why I haven’t rushed to seek most of these out. Top Gun was a slog for me, I have to admit.

Is it bad that my brain keeps trying to parse the dogfights as part of that one episode of Farscape? That said, if these guys started tearfully confessing their love for each other after one of them got possessed by a skull-faced alien, I would probably be paying less attention to Tom Cruise’s teeth

I’m also a little distracted by the progression of Tom Cruise’s dental work. Like, his teeth aren’t Legend bad, but they’re not yet the perfect Hollywood caps, either.

Watching the original Top Gun for the first time. The makeup department was very liberal with that glycerine spray bottle, wow. Everyone is SO sweaty, all the time.

She doesn’t have a channel, but you should look up Lynne Kelly’s work. She talks about human memory and Indigenous knowledge systems, and how that explains Neolithic monuments. There are several videos of her speaking on YouTube. She has changed the way I see the world. Her books are amazing.

The new waterfront project is amazing, a for-real GOOD THING in this hideous timeline. And this story makes it almost magical. Have a read, it will kick your weekend off right. Something to be thankful for, indeed.

All I want in life is to persuade everyone, when encountering politics & culture, to ask, "why are we talking about this?" I mean that very literally: anything you encounter on your screens reflects a choice. Someone covered that, talked about that, rather than the many other things out there. Why?

Hey Canada! If you have never seen When Night is Falling by Patricia Rozema, it's currently streaming on Crave. Highly recommend.

It's my absolute favourite in the subgenre of Canadian lesbian movies from the 90s. And possibly my favourite (still) Don McKellar performance.
