Even though it's designed for features, I found the information really useful as I was putting my pilot back together. A few of the items on the checklist work slightly differently in television and in film, but the actual checklist itself is relevant to both.
Definitely worth checking out!

The podcast is an episode of the Screenwriting Life called The Feature Film Story Engine Checklist (episode 263 rebroadcast Sept 18th).

This book gives advice, then presents you with exercises that guide you along the way in baby steps. It's teaching you how to think. Also, the example script is a generic episode of Everybody Loves Raymond.
Everyone's process is different and YMMV, but this is helping me at the moment.
4π§΅
I'm finding it helpful, because unlike many of the other books I've read, it doesn't give you advice and then present you with an example like Breaking Bad (or whatever), like here, recreate this, one of the best scripts ever written.
3π§΅
The book is The TV Writer's Workbook: A Creative Approach to Television Scripts by Ellen Sandler.
It was published in 2007, but shockingly, the associated website is still up and running.
2π§΅
Two more #TVwriting resources to add to the list. Both of these have been helping enormously as I work through notes and extensive rewrites on a pilot.
One book and one (yes another) podcast episode.

Our logo of a silhouette of a phoenix rising above flames and a ringed planet. On the bird are terribly added clip-arts of a red Santa hat and a scarf. Snow is falling in the foreground. Effects added terribly mostly to annoy Tara who does an amazing job at graphics and design for us (sorry not sorry).

In my defense, I got notes on a script last night that were brutal but fair, which are both the best kind and the worst kind. So it's taking a bit of an emotional run-up to dive in today.

27.11.2025 20:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0We used to toboggan down the slope of a ravine. Multiple trees. Slope so steep we often couldn't get back up it with the toboggan.
