Hungary apparently has an incredibly innovative way to combat speeding on one of its highways. If you drive at the correct speed, your tires make music! I imagine this also does wonders for driver fatigue. (Sorry for the insta link.)

Ok, that was a ton of fun. Even more fun with snark lightly engaged.

Surely we’re headed into the climactic sequence here… how are there still 40min left in this movie?!

I mean, it wouldn’t be Top Gun if it wasn’t a little bit gay. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚

Absolutely!

11.10.2025 23:10 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I am forced to admit, though, I’m enjoying Maverick WAY more than the original Top Gun.

11.10.2025 23:09 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Hell YES she is. I watched multiple seasons of a not-great Australian detective show just for her and I have no regrets.

Cowards! The original Top Gun would have racked focus to Jon Hamm’s ass as he walked away from that beach scene and you all know it! πŸ˜‚

Apparently the only way for women to have anything to say in this movie is to make them fonts of exposition. We are 2 for 2!

11.10.2025 22:20 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Oh, I already love Jon Hamm’s character more than everyone in the original movie combined. That sigh! Oh honey, you are all of us. Well, me at least.

There’s something weird about Tom Cruise’s face, right? Like, it’s not just me? I’m assuming it’s plastic surgery. Maybe I’m just not used to seeing it on a man?

11.10.2025 22:13 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Ok, on tonight’s menu - Top Gun: Maverick.

I asked why, when scientists are fleeing the US, we're so obsessed with attracting AI weirdos. Could we maybe focus on cancer researchers instead? Or developers of sustainable tech?

This is SO like Canada, though. 10 years behind the US and suddenly determined to catch up right as the bubble bursts

For the one-and-a-half people who've been enjoying my never-ending thread of writing resources, here's another one! A great approach to thinking about general meetings.

Every woman in the 90s was bi because of Lucy Lawless. If she ever put on the dress whites it might just break sexuality as we know it.

I love this so much.

And the Navy has really come up with an impressive bit of tailoring. Someone should study it. Maybe that menswear guy? πŸ˜‚

11.10.2025 12:20 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I think it’s the dress whites, honestly. Yes the dog fights are sexy, and yes there was all the flexing and the sweating and the taking off of shirts. But honestly, no one is straight when they’re wearing the dress whites.

11.10.2025 02:57 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It was, indeed, very very gay, I will give you that! I can’t remember when, exactly, but my brain chimed in with a chorus of β€œIn the Navy!” at least twice.

If there was any part of me that had any interest in testosterone whatsoever, I would have been very well served.

(Not a judgement! Just my weird taste.)

The list of 80s movies I somehow missed is long and shocking. I’m slowly catching up as things appear on streaming.

But also, if the movies don’t centre women I find it very hard to care, which is why I haven’t rushed to seek most of these out. Top Gun was a slog for me, I have to admit.

11.10.2025 02:35 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Is it bad that my brain keeps trying to parse the dogfights as part of that one episode of Farscape? That said, if these guys started tearfully confessing their love for each other after one of them got possessed by a skull-faced alien, I would probably be paying less attention to Tom Cruise’s teeth

11.10.2025 01:51 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I’m also a little distracted by the progression of Tom Cruise’s dental work. Like, his teeth aren’t Legend bad, but they’re not yet the perfect Hollywood caps, either.

Watching the original Top Gun for the first time. The makeup department was very liberal with that glycerine spray bottle, wow. Everyone is SO sweaty, all the time.

Jefferson Fisher

After the episode on TV Staffing Meetings, this is probably the second-most-useful podcast episode in existence.

β€œHow to Never Struggle with Small Talk.” I KNOW!

This is from The Jefferson Fisher Podcast about communicating with confidence.

She doesn’t have a channel, but you should look up Lynne Kelly’s work. She talks about human memory and Indigenous knowledge systems, and how that explains Neolithic monuments. There are several videos of her speaking on YouTube. She has changed the way I see the world. Her books are amazing.

The new waterfront project is amazing, a for-real GOOD THING in this hideous timeline. And this story makes it almost magical. Have a read, it will kick your weekend off right. Something to be thankful for, indeed.

All I want in life is to persuade everyone, when encountering politics & culture, to ask, "why are we talking about this?" I mean that very literally: anything you encounter on your screens reflects a choice. Someone covered that, talked about that, rather than the many other things out there. Why?

Hey Canada! If you have never seen When Night is Falling by Patricia Rozema, it's currently streaming on Crave. Highly recommend.

It's my absolute favourite in the subgenre of Canadian lesbian movies from the 90s. And possibly my favourite (still) Don McKellar performance.
