TECH COMPANY: “It’s bread over the internet, but for free!”

HUMANS: “Yeah. Can you run out of venture capital and fail before we don’t have actual bread? Cheers.”

Again, noting some stuff first time for me about this ‘A.I. Oh, she?’ Stuff

Promoted by a great video by S.D.Baker on AI errors, I tried something: I asked it about something I made up.

I wrote: “Quickly - help! What’s a gronnockith?”

What you think it said?

University Using AI to Falsely Accuse Students of Cheating With AI Australian Catholic University used an AI tool to falsely accuse students of cheating us an AI, taking months to clear their name.

Like a piece of shit eating itself.

important on LLMs for academics:

1️⃣ LLMs are usefully seen as lossy content-addressable systems

2️⃣ we can't automatically detect plagiarism

3️⃣ LLMs automate plagiarism & paper mills

4️⃣ we must protect literature from pollution

5️⃣ LLM use is a CoI

6️⃣ prompts do not cause output in authorial sense

yeah
I get some people prefer it - one person tells me using it is more ‘relaxing‘ than searching Google*
But just the idea its a first point of contact

dunno if this is normal btw for probably 18 - 23 year olds

*I no longer use (LLMS are better than it but not coz search is bad but google is bad

Of course I got results
- generic
- or it ‘googled‘ it for me
- or gave me Amazon search results
All the normal things someone who uses the web would get

And not relevant to why in the real world I was looking

Notes:
- he didn’t suggest searching Amazon
- yet that’s all ChatGPT did

so this is not going to amaze folk but noting it for myself, as it’s my first time

in a toy store yesterday (looking for a BTTF Delorean hotwheels fwiw). The floor staff didn’t know what BTTF was. Got a more experienced staff member who did. He suggested I ask ChatGPT where to buy it

So I did

They Want To Ban Books To Keep Us From Coming Out Quick housekeeping! I’m doing a flurry of events once again: Tuesday I’ll be in the Koret Auditorium at the SF Public Library talking about banned books for...

Today is National Coming Out Day!

It's also Freedom to Read Day, aka the last day of Banned Books Week.

This feels right — because the main reason they try to ban books is to keep people from dreaming they could ever come out.

I’d not heard thwt explanation. From my rumour mill (us Irish folk), I’d heard ‘OK’ was for ‘O’Kelly’ some Irish site supervisor who signed off on work.

(To be fair, the same mill gave me the idea that ‘jazz’ comes from the Irish word ‘deas’, which means ‘nice’ - and I reckon that’s not true)

I can’t speak for all left-handed* people like me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if many other left-handers - ciatógs in Ireland - are dismissive of the kind of freaking out about trans and non-binary and etc as a ‘spreading‘ among the yoof

ciatógs did too

*not ‘lefties’, but literally left handed

This is a good game.

I have an English degree and boosted a major publishing house’s share price, and saved a high street retail chain from closure.

If a Mickey Mouse degree lets you create actual Mickey fucking Mouse, it’s probably easily as good “for the economy” as business studies.

This is great! The point on 'general' is very helpful.

For my work, I'll still use 'intelligence' (not sure I'm ready to throw out that folk concept yet). But I'm not sure of the 'general' part....

1 October 1945:

The first issue of Les Temps Modernes is published –– a monthly cultural and political journal led by Sartre and Beauvoir, with a host of other major figures on the editorial board.

The journal is named after a Charlie Chaplin film. Pablo Picasso designed the cover.

Sidney Lumet: in his book about making movies (called 'Making Movies'), he has a whole section on different kinds of actors - and one type are those who like to improvise. His response was: nope. You can improvise when you know your lines....

I wonder if it actually happened? Was it ai generated?

the bizarre scene in the US (Portland?) when a whole gang of camo masked ICE agents, one after another, chased (but didn’t catch) a single person on a bike

peeling off in lines-

Water balletic they were, or like ‘space invaders’-monsters

Ezracles: It is important for intellectuals to say what is most useful.
Socrates: But is that true?
Ezracles: Certainly I believe it to be true Socrates.
Socrates: But how can I tell you are not just saying that because you think it useful to do so?

this is the new book by the founder of the AI doomsday cult and his charity's CEO on why stopping the doomsday AI is the most important job on earth

it's called IF ANYBODY BUILDS IT, EVERYONE DIES which is y'know pretty straightforward

I’m almost finished writing my book

It’s now at: I look at the mad bits and decide do I need to develop them or delete them. If I develop them, they stay mad but with (hopefully) better arguments

(it’s about time & AI - the ‘what am I doing?’ bits concern LLMs, I argue for things I don’t believe)
