Learning is done best in community. The most important function of educational institutions is providing spaces for building that community. Every time we suggest a student would be well served by β€œasking a chatbot,” we are cutting off an opportunity for that student to engage with their classmates, instructors, or librarians. Those interactions, however small, are what constitute communities of learners.

This irritates me too bc in Austin TX developers DID build enough housing that housing/rent prices started going down -- and now bc of that they don't want to build there anymore. So the problem will reassert itself eventually. The answer is public housing!!!

Friendly reminder that dishwashers made after 1995 or so are so water and energy efficient that even if you ran them twice fully loaded it would still use less water than handwashing the same load.

So many "green" things feel like sacrifices. Dishwashers are not one of them.

Really interesting results showing that even if they controlled for what info you encountered, the *friction* of seeking out and reading thru info for what you’re looking for enhances learning.

Yeah I honestly think one of the biggest problems with LLMs is that, unlike a list of search results, they assert "this is the answer, you can stop looking." And despite being constantly warned to ignore that part, I think it affects how people view the information.

21.11.2025 14:58 β€” πŸ‘ 59    πŸ” 2    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

It’s widely known (and, I think, pretty uncontroversial) that learning requires effort β€” specifically, if you don’t have to work at getting the knowledge, it won’t stick.

Even if an LLM could be trusted to give you correct information 100% of the time, it would be an inferior method of learning it.

What's extremely funny is not wanting to read the article and trying to glean insight purely from comments is perfectly in line with someone who thinks chatgpt is the best way to find information.

I really hate it when scientists keep saying that β€œwe need to rebuild trust in science,” because it implies that scientists are to blame for the mistrust rather than the millions of dollars of dark money that have funded political attacks on science in order to advance a far right agenda.

I'd recommend seeing a physical therapist, if you have access. I just had an MRI yesterday that diagnosed a hip labral tear after years of pain and have now found out like half of adults over 40 have one. Hip pain could be one of a million things so getting personalized care is key.

Idk what exactly constitutes "tool use" but a wolf pulling a crab trap out of water to get the crab is less complicated than most of the puzzle toys my cats can solve

Few things bug me more than higher ed leaders saying that we lost our mission and lost the trust of the public, when we have actually been the target of a decades-long smear campaign by the right wing that worked. The moment we’re losing our mission is right now, in capitulation.

it is almost as if accommodating and conceding to far right ideas legitimizes them and signals to voters that the far right is a legitimate choice for governance

Urbanismβ€”the notion that cities are good, that we should build housing in the dense walkable neighborhoods where people want to live, and that urban governance should prioritize city residents’ quality of life over suburban drivers’ convenienceβ€”remains a radical political program in America.
