Now it’s a free-for-all. It would be great if we had some minimum standards for urgent care.

Historically, urgent care’s were started to basically try to poach some low-acuity patients from emergency departments. UCs are not covered under EMTALA, so they can take only folks who can pay. At least in NYC, the first UCs were started by EM docs and staffed by them.

Some are staffed by Emergency Physicians who are trained to recognize organ-threatening conditions, some are not. And there’s no real way to know.

Yes, the system sucks. But j this case, could you make appointment directly with an Ophthamologist? Or even an optometrist? Also, did they do a slit lamp exam in urgent care? There are no real requirements to calling yourself an urgent care and some are better than others.

Lost faith several years ago. Will take a lot more than this to get me back.

Abolish ICE. Reform not possible. Abolishment is the minimum acceptable option.
