What we need is compassionate consistency—something that can be sustained over time.

Stop making people feel that they’re emotionally dangerous. It feeds the old conditioning that we’re too much, too intense, too needy to like.

The BPD label has always made sense to me, but it has also caused me harm. So let me be clear: the formal diagnosis is something I have. Not something I am.

And regarding the times that I have yelled or felt fury, those letters—as much as the medical model of psychiatry likes to believe otherwise—do not tell you why.

Knowing I was diagnosed with BPD wouldn’t tell you that I currently relax by needle felting, or that Mystery Science Theatre 3000 makes me laugh until my sides hurt. You’d never know that I can’t remember the last time I shouted at anyone (really).

It’s BPD awareness month. I am a BPD-labelled person. But that doesn’t really tell you anything about me at all. You’d never know from that acronym that I’m an average cook, a devoted cat parent, and a chronic napper.

Also, hey Bluesky! I’m Itch or Izz, whatever suits you. Agender; they/them only please. My area of interest (and informal research rn) is the impact of a BPD diagnosis in specific contexts. Outside of psychology, I love Discworld, night-snacking, and being a general menace.

That’s not to say that clinical/counselling psychologists aren’t doing so; I’ve met many in my time who are utterly brilliant. But there’s barely any literature. Critical clinical psychology barely seems to exist in research. Anyone have any recs? #socialpsyc #psychsky

Critical social psychology rightfully looks at hierarchies, identity, power etc. & can provide really valuable info for clinical psych. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it feels like we also should be approaching clinical with the critical social lens from the get-go #socialpsyc #psychsky
