Young Democrats of North Carolina

This week, following her vote to override Governor Stein’s veto of anti-immigrant legislation, Rep. Carla Cunningham disgraced her office with a hate-filled speech attacking the very immigrant communities she was elected to serve. To say “all cultures are not equal” is completely disqualifying and has no place in our party. Immigration is an unqualified good. Diversity is an unqualified good. These are the very ideals our nation is founded on: that people from every background can come here with nothing and build something beautiful. At our country’s main port of entry, the Statue of Liberty bears our promise to the world. She doesn’t declare that some cultures are less equal than others. She doesn’t fearmonger about assimilation or a conveyor belt. Lady Liberty—the United States of America—declares just this: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” We are better because of the immigrant communities who call our country, state, and cities home. Rep. Cunningham’s constituents deserve better than a representative who rejects this ideal and dehumanizes their neighbors on the House floor. To Rep. Cunningham: Your override vote was shameful. Your words were abhorrent. And you will be held accountable by your community. Good luck.

Our hearts are with everyone who knew and loved Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her spouse, and we continue hoping and praying for the full recovery of Senator John Hoffman and his spouse. These heinous shootings were a targeted act of terror. It is unacceptable and nauseating to think about. This is the result of years of right wing extremists vilifying and demonizing Democratic elected leaders. President Trump and leaders across the Republican Party need to condemn this or we’re truly beyond lost.

3. Show up everywhere.

We are going to be everywhere we can be. My mission over these next 100 days is going to be making sure our chapters and members have the resources they need to engage in their communities, and whenever I can, I'm going to be right there beside them.

2. We need to engage young people where they are at.

We still have work to do to bring folks back to the table who stayed home in 2024 because they didn't like what our party had to offer. Our caucuses are a vital tool to do that, and I'm focused on building them up.

1. We need to be organized all across North Carolina.

We have races on the ballot in 25/26 that we cannot leave uncontested & campaigns that need support. These next 100 days I'm going to be traveling across the state getting chapters of young Democrats organized & ready to go.

Rather than accept their defeat, Jefferson Griffin and NC Republicans are working to steal this election by throwing out the lawful votes of 65,000 North Carolinians. Their legal arguments are nonsense, their respect for voters is non-existent, and this needs to end. Trans people deserve the freedom to live openly & be protected under the law.

While there are folks who will choose to demonize and attack trans and non-binary folks, there are so many more who choose love and acceptance.
