There are more than 900 plant gall forming animals in the UK, including mites, beetles, flies, gall wasps, plant sucking bugs (psyllids), aphids and sawflies.

3/.
The RHS says: there are 70 species of cynipid gall wasp. It is the larval stage of these insects that induce the plant to produce abnormal growths, known as galls, that enclose the developing larvae. These galls are part of the biodiversity a healthy oak tree supports.

What do you notice? What do you wonder?
These are oak galls - caused by types of gall wasp laying eggs in different parts of the oak tree.

Leaf rust on a frangipani leaf.
DYK leaf rusts are actually fungi!
Itβs characterised yellow/orange powdery pustules on the underside of leaves, which can lead to premature leaf drop. While it can be unsightly, it generally doesnβt harm the long-term health of mature trees. #ScienceIsEverywhere
Hope you are all having a BRILLIANT time (and everyone has remembered their badges!!) π

Why should science stand shoulder to shoulder with English and maths?
