I wonder, when the portal to hell opened on them, when the hard photons and terrible pulses of neutrons ripped apart their substance and left only shadows, in that moment did they have time to know? To die? Or are they trapped in some dimensional purgatory, the first humans to perish like this.

In a very strong field, it's my favorite of his too. Great film.

This story from Douglas Adams has been going around for years but it remains one of my favourites.

I think this holds water. The whole "Move fast, break stuff" doesn't scale up to a nation of hundreds of millions of people. Best case scenario: a rout at the next election. Worst case: large scale political violence.

Negotiating With Terrorists, Unsuccessfully How to lose ideological battles by believing in nothing.

America's most prestigious universities fundamentally believe in nothing except themselves. Their capacity to lose ideological battles is therefore infinite.

Impeachment is a Duty The importance of telling a consistent and accurate story on matters of fire.

I wrote about the absolute moral necessity of Congress impeaching a president who represents a threat to democracy, the nation, and every person on the planetβ€”and also about the practical necessity of doing so, because not doing so tells a incoherent story.

The clerks where I get my lunch said a man came in last week and asked them where the public entrance to 26 Federal Plaza was. He locked his bike outside, and it’s been there since.
