Maybe it's that I didn't have much X exposure. I knew he was a founding member of the X-Men, but when I was reading it was Fall of the Mutants X-Factor, while Madelyn was doing fine in X-Men.

the New Mutants where the team is dealing with Doug's death. The rage and grief that Illyana showed, feeling betrayed by a mentor, let down by the world, ready to let her hell world control her... it was locked in that I will love and die for this character. 2/2

I was reading Avengers in the 80s, with rare dips into X-territory. And I locked in a few favorites that have persisted. Kitty Pryde was formulated to appeal to me. My brain chemistry was formulated to love Cyclops. And Illyana- I had her comforting Kitty after Colossus dumped her, and I had 1/2

All true. Mackay's run with the character is one of the current books I really look forward to. And I adored Marc coming over for an apology/date while her son was there.

As someone who grew up on the Avengers, East and West, while I did really like the Fraction/Aja series, there was always the voice reminding me "This guy, while goofy, led a team of Avengers as good as anyone and had Iron Man's respect." And yes, he beat the Grandmaster.

Illyana is extremely charming to me but I never cared for the "she's stupid" schtick and I'm very happy that is has been acknowledged to be an act by Magik herself. She deserves the spotlight she's currently getting as one of Chris Claremont's great contributions to the mutant canon.

Sometimes the writer's deep cut doesn't work, but Mackay going "remember when these two were couple for a hot minute in the 80s?" has really gone well.
