This is the most outrageous cognitive dissonance I ever heard.

By my count Labour won 50 of the 68 (74%) local government races they contested. They should be very happy happy with this result - and hopefully it encourages more local government efforts in the future. #nzpol

Not only is this rude, inappropriate, partisan, costly, and illegal, it reveals the fundamentally anti-American idiocy of this administration’s policy of handing over to China the most important economic sector of the 21st century.

a person is laying on the ground in a dark room with a window . Alt: Indiana Jones escapes by rolling under a heavy stone door, rapidly closing guillotine-style … and manages to reach back in and snatch his hat at the last second.

With polls now officially closed on this local election day…

✊ Kudos to everyone who managed to get your votes in under the wire

🀞And best of luck to all candidates, currently keeping your cool (and holding onto your hats) while we wait for the counts to come in

Democracy ftw, hopefully! #nzpol

You could argue that the next council has no mandate to govern if this is the turnout.

Isochrone map showing area within 45-minute e-bike trip to city centre Auckland.

E-bikes as rapid transit. There is a sweet spot, 8-14km from the city centre, where gaps in the mass rapid transit network and slow buses can be filled by e-bikes. Map = 45 minute e-bike travel time.

Some quotes from New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon:

β€’ β€œThe world doesn’t owe you a living”
β€’ β€œI'm wealthy, I'm β€’ you know β€’ sorted.”
β€’ β€œjust make a marmite sandwich”
β€’ β€œI don’t care.” (said multiple times since becoming PM)

"The world doesn't owe you a living"

If the world doesn't owe me a living, then I don't owe my boss any labour.

If the world doesn't owe me a living, then the market doesn't owe you a profit.

If the world doesn't owe us a living, then we don't owe the leaders of it any respect.

It’s not new funding. β€œthe initiative will be funded from Health New Zealand’s baseline”. So it’s actually being cut from somewhere else.

We already underfunded the health system at the Budget. This is a further cut

When speaking to Tommy Robinson at the far right demonstration in London today, Elon Musk wore a t-shirt saying "What would Orwell think?"

So let's dive in - what would George Orwell think about Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk? 🧡

What I Read this Week Chinese engineers vs American lawyers; the decimation of the US middle class; and the failure of carbon capture and storage.

"The US became a lawyerly society because it became a monopoly capitalist society – not the other way around (as people like Klein and Wang might argue).

The inefficiency and corruption evident in US society flows from the structure of the capitalist economy."

Excellent piece calling bullshit on the story that NZ can and should transform our economy in the same ways that Ireland and Singapore shifted theirs.

The new trains, named TΕ«hono for their role in connecting and uniting people in the lower North Island, will be the first battery electric trains in the Southern Hemisphere. Alstom will also support local jobs and local business and help develop capacity for NZ’s rail industry. 3/

Amazon to Invest $4.4 Billion in New Zealand Data Centers Amazon has formally launched cloud services in New Zealand and dusted off a plan first announced in 2021 to invest more than NZ$7.5 billion ($4.4 billion) in data centers in the South Pacific nation.

Funny to see New Zealand’s prime minister try to take credit for a plan announced four years ago then delayed by Amazon.

I find it hard to believe Amazon’s figures, but even more than that it’s wild to see the fanfare over greater dependence on US cloud firms in light of Trump and the CLOUD Act.

Police recently disrupted a firearms diversion ring, which included a dealer. The arrests were based on pre-registry information. Luckily the registry makes these investigations much easier. The seized weapons include many duplicates: a surefire sign of diversion.

It’s not ok to point your fingers at someone speaking at a public meeting and pretend to shoot them, and I don’t understand why media aren’t talking about this when they literally have photos.

C&R’s big transport policy this election is to reverse the Dominion Road bus lane time extension.

Folks, you could’ve had Light Rail down that road but National’s local govt grouping won’t even let you have bus priority at peak times.

10,000 people bus through there each day!
