...the civil unrest and cultural changes in the 60s & 70s or was it just a the freedom to make these kinds of movies now free of the recently retired Hays Code? There's an argument to be made that all cinema got not just more violent but gorier, think the Godfather, Deliverance, Jaws & the Exorcist

Same! After CC got cancelled I still had the jones so I graduated to a non-animal version of the JLA

I'm just a couple issues before you!! Captain Carrot #3. They sold them at newstands then, I was a kid & the costumed animals hit me right in the sweet spot. I think DC is doing an OK job of bringing in young readers but books like CC are the perfect gateway drugs! I got hooked on comics for life!!

And if you're looking for a fun spooky season read may I recommend his adaptation of the Hound & Other Stories? The Temple is a bone chilling descent–as the doomed submarine sinks the pages get darker & darker and when an eerie light emerges white on the page never felt so full of dread!

Worth noting: Alan Moore was on Swamp Thing at the time of this list & it’s peak Perez/Wolfman Titans & Lifedeath era X-men - this is extremely esteemed company to be in

Atari Force is one of those books that newer readers may hear of & dismiss as a curio like Rom or Micronauts - something older readers are nostalgic for - but that really undersells how spectacular a book it was!! It was so much more than an Atari promo book, fantastic space opera w comic book DNA
