Persis's Statement: I am outraged by reports that ICE kidnapped one of our neighbors in Roslindale Square earlier today. ICE’s presence in our communities does not make us safer—it spreads fear and tears families apart. Our neighbors deserve to shop, go to school, and worship without the constant threat of being taken off the street. I am deeply grateful to the LUCE Network and the community organizations stepping up to support this individual. I call on the federal government to get ICE out of Massachusetts, and on the Massachusetts Legislature to immediately pass legislation that protects our communities and keeps our neighbors safe.

These murders show it is not just our immigrant families, friends, and neighbors who are unsafe but all of us who are willing to stand up to power and show up for what is right. I call on our legislators to urgently pass legislation to end cooperation with ICE and protect immigrants and our communities. My heart aches for Alex and Renee’s families and I stand in solidarity with the people of Minnesota taking to the streets and demanding that ICE get out of their communities. Through all the darkness, it’s encouraging to see so many community members standing up against the atrocities committed by our federal government.

Democracy truly does start at home.

We owe it to the people of Minneapolis, and to communities across the country, to respond with compassion, to demand transparency and accountability, and to recommit to policies that protect human life and dignity rather than erode them.

Safety is built through trust, dignity, and accountability. It is built when people can seek help, go to work, take their kids to school, and access services without fear. Violence—by anyone—undermines that safety and leaves lasting scars.

Aggressive and punitive immigration enforcement tears at the fabric of our communities and puts lives at risk—particularly in communities already subject to over-policing and systemic inequities.

I am deeply disturbed by the shooting involving ICE in Minneapolis. Any act of violence is devastating, and my thoughts are with everyone harmed, their families, and the community grappling with the fear and trauma this has caused. And sadly, it happens too often at the hands of this administration. If you can't attend a protest, I would suggest speaking to your values in whatever ways you can, and attending to something *you can do*. Remember, many things are happening at once. They want to keep your head spinning.
