That being said, when you're asked to do something, especially something that comes with a contract of any sort, please take the time to review that contract VERY CAREFULLY. Read it with the assumption that the people on the other end will be looking to sue you. It's the only way to be safe.

A good person and a skilled politician could have covered up the tattoo and turned it into a story of personal growth - not getting drunk enough to get a Nazi tattoo, reassessing the people he was with and his values. This isn't just a bad tattoo, it's a sign of juicelessness.

It does not really make sense to have a single committee overseeing all of the areas of science that the Department of Energy covers. DOE does everything from nuclear weapons development to searching for dark matter, and there is little to no overlap in the expertise required for these (anymore). 🧪

DOE's public statements about this say that all the ad hoc committees, including HEPAP, will be replaced by a single committee. As an STS researcher, I am compelled to point out that this overlaps with the Nazi playbook for taking over German physics. My slides about how they did that:🧪⚛️🔭

I have not talked openly on social media about my work on HEPAP for various reasons, but now that my time officially as an appointee to HEPAP is over, I want to say that I think the end of HEPAP is an incredibly dangerous development for academic freedom in American science, esp HEP/astro. 🧪🔭⚛️

For a long time, P5 reports have guided Congressional allocations. In other words, HEPAP played a major role in establishing the national priorities for a field where the US has long been a global leader. HEPAP also supported creating global partnerships in particle physics & particle cosmology. 🧪⚛️🔭

College lectures may not always be engaging, but in the past, students still had to go (or borrow notes from a classmate). Now that many lectures are available to view remotely, Dr. Wolf-Wendel added, professors have to try harder to draw students into the classroom.

This is just another higher ed hit piece, but I was dinged in my tenure case for not recording my classes. For people getting the advice “It’s dumb to do it alone, you need to do it en masse”, the counterpoint is that it is also dumb to make it hard to navigate a large flying heavy thing when you under it. This is also why it is a felony.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

I know I harp on this a lot, but Judith Butler as points out in "Who's Afraid of Gender?", sex has a biological *component* but what that biology *means* is determined by culture. Humans can and do change sex.

Despite my own personal lack of faith, I am not sympathetic to people harassing other folks for believing in the supernatural/godly. I’m especially not sympathetic to ignorant atheists who are so Christiancentric that they assume all religions work the way evangelical Christianity does.
