A good song is like a good story in the fact that at some point they both cross some arbitrary and undefined boundary where the creator pauses and recognizes that something has been realized.

So, when does a song become a song? When does a story become a story?

Grimdark has been a favorite of mine, but it comes in a variety of styles. I gravitate towards the Ana Smith Spark/R Scott Bakker/George Martin style of grimdark though I do love Abercrombie as well.

I haven't gotten into that yet, there's a lot of Lawrence I still need to get into.

I've read book of the Ancestor and looked into Prince of Thorns, but I found the latter not in my taste. A combination of voice and style I think. BOTA felt a bit more dimensional and refined in the writing. I ripped through the three books fairly quickly.

Every birthday is an important one. Even if it's an arbitrary event on the scale of things, it's a notch in the world to mark your continued existence.

Hope it's a good one.

What about Prince of Thorns captured you over your experience with Book of the Ancestor (so far)?

I reckon evil would also be in pursuit of as much power as possible and you would be hampering that pursuit by doing this.

Welcome to McCarthy, I hope you enjoy your stay. Some of us never leave.

The Crossing is my favorite after Blood Meridian.

Currently wending my way through Tom Holland's excellent translation of "Histories of Herodotus" and am wondering how many times Herodotus felt like there just wasn't enough sass in the account he was told and felt compelled to address the issue.

"The gathering call" sent me.

'HEAR YE, HEAR YE. LET THE SOUND OF THE COCK'S CALL AWAKEN YE TO THE COCK OF OUR ADORATION.'

And then it ends up on a shelf in a goodwill and someone buys it for .99 because the cover is charming and the blurb is evocative and something about the sentence they read on random page they flipped to speaks to them and when they do finish it they feel as though they are richer for it.

Blindsight by Peter Watts. I offer this review from James Nicolle to provide context. "Whenever I feel my will to live becoming too strong, I read Peter Watts."

Re-imagining history for the purpose of fiction is done all the time. Sometimes fiction is at its most effective when it deals with societal flaws, sometimes its effective when it imagines a world without them.

It comes down to intent and execution at the end of the day.
