It never ceases to confound me just how many folks think the point of essays is to provide teachers with essays. That teachers just like, collect them, or need them for sustenance or something. Rather than the point of them being the *actual fucking act of learning how to think about shit*

I really appreciate this TikToker with Tourette syndrome, Shay, for taking the time to educate so many of us (including me) about her disability and coprolalia in light of what happened at the BAFTAs with John Davidson when Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage.

I learned a lot.

A tic is not an "accident" or error on anyone's part. A better comparison would be if someone fell into you because they have Ataxia. If someone fell in me because of a neurological disorder, I would insist they have no reason to apologize to me. It is not their fault. It's called basic empathy.

Minneapolis isn't an especially sweary place but there are so many houses that have homemade "FUCK ICE" signs and I've had multiple conversations with parents about how we're okay with our kids using that word in this context because sometimes it IS okay to swear and this is one of those times.

I still wear masks whenever I go out, and tbh at first the glares and weird condescending tones bothered me but I've gotten to a point at which I have no problem giving those people my best, flattest "fuck off" Auntie stare. It's weird to me that the assumption is always that I do it for myself ...

I am a physician who will be wearing an N95 in all clinical encounters for the rest of my life because I don’t want to commit the harm of passing on a respiratory pathogen to a patient. This seems like a minimum duty, like handwashing, but I am unfortunately in a vanishingly small minority.

The cool thing is…

It’s not too late to start wearing a K/N95 again.

Or to normalize “please don’t come over if you’re sick”

Or to demand indoor air quality investments (ventilation, filtration, ASHRAE 241 etc) in schools.

Or to gift air cleaners to friends.

Or lobby for health facility masking

I was thinking about that today because I remember when the hospital ship was docked in the Hudson River because NYC hospitals were overflowing. Morgue trucks were stacked up behind every hospital. Everyone seemed to know someone who died of COVID.

We seem to have memory-holed ALL OF IT.

They were stacking bodies up in refrigerated trucks and now people are just either pretending it never happened or blaming vaccines.

Our conversation with @mollycrabapple.bsky.social was so good that we had to punt a new segment about the NBA’s Israel relationship. I played the new bumper anyway.

His behaviour really doesn't actually represent very many of us (I'm in Canada), and it's probably wise to always remember that he is, at best, strongly neoliberal, and at worst trending in the same general direction as the US when it comes to a lot of subjects. He lacks nuance and life experience.

U of T perpetuating two terrible ideas:
1. AI output is creative
2. Human creativity is about individuals.

All creativity depends on collectively held and shared knowledge.

People can say it’s utopian or dreamy but it’s a fact that you have to believe new things are possible, fundamentally, in order to make them real. You have to make the choice to believe that more than this is possible & not be resigned to this being the way things have to be because it’s not at all.

I regularly see people wondering how it's possible that there are so many musicians and writers and film makers and artists from a tiny nation like Iceland.

And the answer is really simple: State funding for art education and artists. I literally get a salary from the government to write books.
