The crossovers are starting to get muddled but putting Magneto, the holocaust survivor against nazi Red Skull after all these years is a pretty great idea. Then add in Wanda (Scarlet Witch) and her daddy issues and you got quite a bit of drama going on here. Also, the annual is strange, meta, different, and sometimes hilarious.

So this was something different. I'm not as much into the meta/story about stories idea and definitely not a fan of kids hanging out at a strange school setting, but a fan of morbid children, and the dialogue was great. Also loved the "compass/map" idea about fantasy worlds. I was a little worried that this was going to be YA, but it gets mature pretty quickly.
I was really sad that my favorite character was the first do die in this multiple-murder mystery, since the 2nd book looks like it's a prequel, I'm hoping that character also gets a prequel story.
When I finished this I was thinking I wasn't going to continue the series, but then I read the synopsis for the 2nd book and that changed my mind.

The excrement is hitting the turning air pushing thing. I have been waiting to get to Secret Wars for probably 4 or 5 years and the build-up "Time Runs Out" is pretty crazy. Groups of heroes hunting other groups of heroes, Namor with a bunch of bad guys destroying entire planets to save the Earth and the sense of doom, like none of this matters, because everyone will be dead soon.
They've got my attention.

I've been looking at the cover of this book for probably 30 years or more at bookstores across the country. I think the size of the book kept me from buying it all those years. But this year I promised myself that I would take on some bigger books, on audio and these are all available on Libby so I went for it.
Clocking in at just over 33 hours, this was the longest book on my audio wishlist. Unfortunately, I feel like it could have been 20 hours and been much better. The first 8 hours or so are just a kid running around the castle and a bunch of info-dumps. Then, finally, the adventure starts. So this definitely loses points for taking the length of a short novel just to get moving.
Next it loses points for just taking Norse mythology and Catholicism and just tweaking them a little bit (changing names slightly) and calling it a fantasy world. This is the worst option in my opinion, with the best option being make up your own stuff, the next best being use existing myth. Just calling Odin, Udon and acting like it's something you made up is just dumb.
Once the adventure started it was really fun. Lots of characters, cool bad guys, mysterious fae, Binibik is definitely my favorite character. Simon is okay, though I can't stand "reluctant heroes" and he dips into that sometimes.
I'm expecting the 2nd book to be much better because it won't have 8 hours of world building at the beginning.

I'm not sure how this book got on my wish list, but I'm glad it did. At first, it felt like it might be more like a "dime store novel"/thriller type thing you'd pick up at the airport. It was quick, at just under 10 hours and it's a good thing it was because I was listening to it on Spotify and only had a couple days to finish it before cancelling my free trial period.
It reminded me of Becky Chambers' "The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet", great, deep characters, but not much going on. Except in this, there was definitely more actually going on and I loved the chances that were taken and how I was surprised by things that happened. Though it felt like "sci-fi lite" in the beginning, the author totally redeemed himself by the middle of the book. Also really glad this story wasn't 700 pages or the start of a 10 book series. It basically showed up, kicked ass and left.

This series is the essence of the 90's. If you go over the top, then keep going to over the next top, you'll find The Metabarons. People talk about German porn, like it's the darkest, heaviest stuff, so I guess the darkest, heaviest stuff for the French is comics. The comic relief was occasionally funny in this 2nd volume, whereas in the first volume I just found most of it annoying.
If incest, amputations (voluntary and otherwise), patricide, mass killings and poetic space battles aren't too much for you, you might want to check this out (but start with volume 1).

Some famous people in that first one. Rob Kuntz played Bigby but Iβm not sure who played Otto.

I've played D&D for almost 50 years, but I haven't played Eberron and didn't really know much about it (even thought I probably have 2 or 3 Eberron source books). It always sounded really cool to me, I just never got around to it. That, along with wanting to read something that was magic and action heavy, brought me to pick this up at a local used store.
It wasn't bad. The places they explored were cool, the action was awesome, lots of magic, and the halfling and elves, races you usually think of as "goody-two-shoes", where fierce, which I loved. Unfortunately, the plot was pretty standard, and the characters were pretty flat except for Nyam who was fun sometimes. The book wrapped up well, I was a little worried about a cliffhanger ending.
