This is a good thread. There is a huge difference between "the court system is still able to provide some positive outcomes in some cases" and "the court system is capable of providing due process and the system is fair."

gotcha, the last comment makes it sound like weโve never done anything, and as a californian this riles me up๐
but itโs also weird bc even at its so-called best, u.s. cars have never been exported to europe to any significant degree so iโm not even sure why the original gripe

right, however iโm not talking up export of u.s. cars by any meansโnot sure why you think i am? in fact u.s. cars have failed us so badly iโm welcoming the chinese evโs

โ.. The fundamental problem is that corporations are institutionally ill-equipped to take center stage in policy debates. They are inherently self-interested economic actors with goals that often conflict with those of society.โ

but our cars operate on a scale within the u.s. that it is imperative we move toward decarbonization along with the rest of the world
especially as we/california STARTED regulating car emissions in the late 60s and early 70s!
reagan has so much to answer for ๐ซ
16.02.2026 15:44 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
any way iโm hoping that the chinese ev flood our markets and either our auto industry churns out ev or dies off and either way we transition to ev. this will be rough on employees of the auto industry here but the u.s. auto industry has only itself to blame
will they get a bailout? god i hope not
16.02.2026 15:40 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
now of course ๐๐ฉ is trying to take out the clean air act, kneecap CA, and remove all EV incentives but letโs stay aware of the timelines here
AND europe is backtracking on its 2035 goals so keep an eye out at home, eh?
16.02.2026 15:40 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
however CA emissions remained and bc of our position in the u.s. market the emissions regulations stayed; cheaper to make all cars to one standard than have different ones for different states
then the u.s. auto industry needed bailouts and frankly i think we should have let them fail in 2008
16.02.2026 15:40 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
however u.s. cars have usually been a little too large for european cities because of simple timelines: more of our cities have larger streets and we have more suburbia bc 1 we built later and 2 we had the sheer SPACE to do so. plus we kept gas cheap and europe didnโt

the oversized car fetish is where the bulk of the unsafe comes from: these cars are people killers and this trend is especially evident from the mid teens of 2000s onward

but with the 70s oil crisis, we had plenty of small efficient cars thru the 80s and even 90s. my car in college (early 90s) got upwards of 45mpg, for example. i was so mad when my next car was a measly 25 mpg
but the fossil fuel industry was working overtime & you see kuwait and iraq invasions

<rolls my eyes in californian>
we published the first emissions standards in 1966, put CARB together etc. europe 1-7 starts in 1992. canada aqa, 1991
u.s. pivoted away from smaller efficient cars in part from reagan-era efforts and after the early 2000s the stupid SUV/oversized tanks etc started
